RotoWire Staff Golf Draft Results: 2014 Dollar Values

This article is part of our Golf Draft Kit series.

For those of you who have a golf auction and bid a fixed budget on your golfers, the following is meant to be a guide.

These are the actual dollar values from our RotoWire staff golf league, which took place on Jan. 5. Our rules base winners on total earnings in PGA Tournaments from the Sony Open to the final FedExCup event (we skipped the Hyundai Tournament of Champions due to scheduling conflicts for the draft and also didn't use the fall portion of the new 2013-14 wrap-around schedule), excluding those PGA Tour events held the same week as the the World Golf Championship events and the British Open.

Our format also includes bonus points for the four majors. As a result, some European players may have a higher ranking here than your league. If a European golfer plays in just the four majors and world golf tournaments, he'll still have a lot of value in our league. Our league had 14 members, a budget of $100 per team and each team starts five golfers per week with a total roster of nine golfers. The league has been around since 2000 and this is the first year we moved to a roster of nine golfers in an effort to improve the free agent pool.

The 2014 draft was a flash back to last decade as Tiger Woods has pulled far ahead of the pack as the top golfer - at least according to our league's expectations. Last year in this league's draft, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy both went more than $60 and four other players went for more than $40. Despite what should have been some inflation from a move to rosters of nine players vs. ten (we buy reserves), this year the field is seen more balanced after Woods with only three additional players over $40.

Some surprising prices included Ryo Ishikawa for $14 (lots of promise, but he struggled in his first year as a full-time PGA Tour member last season) and Hideki Matsuyama at $20. Matsuyama is just 20 and it's his first year on the PGA Tour, so expectations are high.

While these dollar values may not exactly fit your league's rules, this should be a good benchmark for your draft preparation.
