PGA TOUR STATS: Wyndham Championship
Each week we'll list the statistical breakdown of the upcoming PGA Tour event. Below are the results of recent tournaments, including last week's PGA Championship, and results from last year's Wyndham Championship.
The results grid was reduced for easier reading, starting with the U.S Open. However, the AVERAGE statistics at the bottom of the grid reflect data from completed 2012 tournaments.

Last Week's PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy broke the 54-leader-will-lose hex. It's about time
The working media will expound on McIlroy's eight-stroke win, a worthy addition to his highlight reel. Included will be his 23 bogey-free holes to clean up Saturday's suspended round and the closing round where he put frosting on the cake with a 15-foot birdie.
In round three, when he picked his ball out of a tree and went on to make par, one stroke penalty included, you knew he was going to win this tournament. It just was going to happen.
Ian Poulter started on fire in the closing round with five consecutive birdies in a blast of six birdies in seven holes. Poulter pulled into second place, and he and Carl Pettersson hung in there until their wheels came off in the middle of the closing nine.
A look at the stroke average at the holes of the Ocean Course is interesting:
RNK | HOLE | PAR | STROKE AVG | BIRDIES | BOGEYS | DBL | OTHER |
1 | 13 | 4 | 4.462 | 35 | 110 | 42 | 5 |
2 | 18 | 4 | 4.438 | 33 | 149 | 23 | 2 |
3 | 10 | 4 | 4.429 | 41 | 144 | 13 | 10 |
4 | 9 | 4 | 4.337 | 24 | 136 | 5 | 1 |
5 | 14 | 3 | 3.371 | 21 | 135 | 14 | 1 |
No eagles at these holes.
How McIlroy compared with the par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes:
McILROY | FIELD | |
Par 3 | 2.812 | 3.227 |
Par 4 | 3.95 | 4.2 |
Par 5 | 4.5 | 4.921 |
The usual complete performance statistics will be posted later in the week.

For many years this tournament was an open bank vault for Sam Snead. He holds the record for most wins at one tournament, eight. His wins spanned four decades: 1938, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1955 1956, 1960 and 1965. His 1965 win was his last title. Tiger Woods is second in this category with his seven wins at the Bridgestone Invitational, Firestone Country Club, South Course.
First-time winners show up here rather often. Last year, Webb Simpson became the 16th first-time PGA Tour winner in the 71st year history of the Wyndham Championship. He was the third straight first-time winner with Ryan Moore in 2009 and Arjun Atwal in 2010. Atwal accomplished a seldom feat inasmuch as he was a Monday qualifier who went on to win later in the week.
Since the FedEx playoffs started, this event sets the first round of 125 players based on their FedEx points at week's end. Players will try to get into the 125 group while others try to advance so as to have a jumpstart for round two and beyond.
Scores will be the 60s. Last year, Padraig Harrington shot 69-68-69-68 6-under 274, tying for 47th. Low scores of the day can also tell a tale.
Last year's Low Rounds of the Day:
Round 1 - 7-under 63, Jeff Quinney Tommy Gainey
Round 2 - 6-under 64, Heath Slocum, Camilo Villegas, William McGirt
Round 3 - 7-under 63, Carl Pettersson
Round 4 - 6-under 64, George McNeill
Last Five Winners and Runners-Up:
2011 – Webb Simpson, 18-under 262
2010 - Arjun Atwalm, 20-under 260
2009 – Ryan Moore, 16-under 264
2008 - Carl Pettersson, 21-under 259
2007 - Brendt Snedeker, 22-under 258
