This Week's RBC Heritage

The par-71 Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, S.C., was designed buy Pete Dye in 1969 with Jack Nicklaus looking over his shoulder as Nicklaus was planning to start course design himself. Dye, who gained recognition with his use of railroad ties in the Caribbean, used the ties here for the first time in the U.S.

Arnold Palmer won the first PGA Tour event here with a 1-under 283. Yes, 1-under. The rest of the field was over par. Harbour Town, which at the start ran 6,657 yards, has acted as a model for Dye's tight fairways and small greens.

The course has been expanded to 7,101 yards, but the tight fairways are still there as are the small greens. In 2012, the course was ranked ninth toughest of 49 courses, just one notch behind Augusta National's No. 8 slot. Needed is driving accuracy, shot shaping, GIR, scrambling and talented putting. Experience helps.
