Things are coming full-swing in college basketball with various conference tournaments in action today, along with Colorado State and Nevada squaring off in a regular season Mountain West finale. The action heats up on DraftKings, with the top prize being bumped up to $5,000 in the $12 Heating Up contest with a five-game Friday slate. The first game tips off earlier than usual with a 6 p.m. EST start time.
Targets
Grant Sherfield, G, Nevada ($8,000 DK)
Sherfield gets a discount in price from $9,400 last weekend after a stout Utah State defense was able to contain him. That's unlikely to be the case here, as Colorado State will push the pace and this game should reach the 70s. Considering this should be a closely-contested affair, Sherfield is unlikely to come off the court for anything more than a quick breather, and he's done a great job at contributing across the stat-sheet. He's a great value even at this price as my second highest projected scorer tonight.
Jay Heath, G, Boston College ($6,100 DK)
Heath is coming off a career-high 28 point game against Florida State, and he'll get an easier matchup against a Miami team that is last in the ACC. Surprisingly, he's priced at a slightly below average salary despite having a great second half of the season where he's emerged as the go-to-guy after Wynston Tabbs transferred. Heath has also rarely been coming off the court as of late -- averaging over 36 minutes over his last five games with over 15 shots per game over that stretch.
Carson Williams, F, Western Kentucky ($4,500 DK)
If you're paying up for some of the top players tonight, you're going to have to go into the sub $5k range. Williams has arguably the highest ceiling for a low-salary option. Over his last seven games, Williams has posted three 30+ point fantasy nights. He's also had two nights under 10 points and thus the low salary, so he's better used in GPPs than cash games as a result. Although he's used in a limited role, he's effective when called upon as a 59-percent shooter from two-point range.
Fades
Charles Bassey, F, Western Kentucky ($9,300 DK)
Bassey has been a dominant player for the Hilltoppers this season, but he's the second most expensive option and I have him ranked just outside my top-5 scorers tonight. He just torched FIU with back-to-back double-double performances, but they're last in the Conference USA and Bassey was held under 30 fantasy points in the two games prior. Old Dominion's weakness has been on the perimeter, as it will use double teams to hold Bassey in check.
James Reese, G/F, North Texas ($7,100 DK)
It's no surprise that the matchup between North Texas and UAB features the lowest over/under on the slate, with the teams ranking second and third in the Conference USA in defensive efficiency. Reese has a limited ceiling, having only outperformed this salary three times this season. In a tough matchup I'm more inclined to go with a less expensive option in Zachary Simmons ($5,700 DK), who is more likely to contribute in a variety of categories.
Trey Jemison, F, UAB ($6,300 DK)
Jemison's minutes have been diminishing recently, as he hasn't played 25 minutes in any of the last four games. He's also only played a limited role in the offense, having attempted single-digit shots in every game since the beginning of February. That leaves him heavily reliant on efficient shooting and a lot of rebounds to live up to this salary. Against a slow-paced and defensive-minded North Texas squad, UAB is the team I'd look to fade altogether tonight.
