FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Wednesday's DFS action kicks off at 12:10 PM EST with an early-only (eight games) contest and an all-day (12 games) slate, leaving only four games for the main slate tonight starting at 7:05 PM EST. Those four games are all interesting, though, in that they involve the Red Sox, a game at Coors Field and a game with a higher run total than said game at Coors Field.

For those interested, we've started an MLB DFS Slack channel for paid RotoWire subscribers. (There is a season-long one as well.) To join those channels, e-mail support@rotowire.com.

PITCHER

Tyler Skaggs, LAA vs CWS ($9,300): Skaggs has hit 30 or more fantasy points in six of his last seven games, with six of those being for at least 40. The White Sox are a good team to target with the seventh-lowest wOBA (.297) and the second-highest strikeout rate (25.9 percent) against left-handed pitching. Skaggs is averaging over a strikeout per inning and is a solid favorite at home against James Shields, putting him in a good spot for both the quality start and win bonuses.

GPP Fade: Edwin Jackson, OAK at TEX ($7,600): Jackson has been surprisingly good for Oakland thus far, scoring at least 19 fantasy points in all six of his starts including performances of 32, 40 and 42 fantasy points. However, a game in late July in Arlington offers less than ideal pitching conditions, and an xFIP over 1.5 runs higher than his ERA suggests some regression is coming. Texas owns the 10th best wOBA at home this season against right-handed pitching (.324).

Cheap GPP Consideration: Jon Gray, COL vs HOU ($8,200): Gray has become a true GPP play with his hit-and-miss track record. He's scored 47 and 64 fantasy points in his last two starts at home and also has games of 55 and 61 at Coors Field this season. The problem is he also has a handful of games with less than 20 fantasy points mixed in there as well. Houston isn't an ideal matchup given its potent bats, but that should keep Gray's ownership down, making him a great GPP play.

FIRST BASE/CATCHER

Mitch Moreland, BOS at BAL ($3,400): Believe it or not this position is a bit tricky to fill tonight with Matt Olson facing a lefty, the Coors Field game significantly raising prices there, and no catchers you can trust in this spot. Moreland has been steady all season against right-handed pitching, as evidenced by his .372 wOBA, and Dylan Bundy has been terrible after a good start to the season.

SECOND BASE

Rougned Odor, TEX vs OAK ($3,400): Second base provdes a tough decision tonight between Odor, Jonathan Schoop and even Jed Lowrie. Odor has been on fire of late with a .937 OPS over his last 30 games, and he gets a good home matchup against Jackson. As already mentioned, the veteran is due for some negative regression, and with an over/under of 12, this game should have plenty of offensive fireworks.

THIRD BASE

David Fletcher, LAA vs CWS ($2,900): Fletcher has responded nicely to being moved to the bottom of the batting order, going 9-for-16 (.562) with three doubles, three RBI and four runs over his last four games. He has also displayed reverse splits since getting called up to the Angels, posting a .371 wOBA against right-handed pitching. He'll get that tonight against Shields, a great pitcher to target when he's on the road (5.47 ERA).

SHORTSTOP

Tim Anderson, CWS at LAA ($2,800): Anderson is firmly in play if you plan on fading Skaggs and using another pitcher, especially in GPPs. Anderson usually assumes the leadoff spot against lefties and has a career .337 wOBA against that handedness, a solid stat for the position. Skaggs has allowed a .324 wOBA at home this season to right-handed hitters, and he's struggled more with that side of the plate over his career.

OUTFIELD

Kole Calhoun, LAA vs CWS ($2,900): Some credit is due to Mike Scioscia, who stuck with Calhoun even when it was almost impossible for him to get an extra base hit early in the year. Calhoun has a .931 OPS over his last 30 games and has found himself in the leadoff spot against right-handed pitching. The case against Shields has been made, and there's a good chance Calhoun's positive regression to the mean continues. Teammate Shohei Ohtani ($3,200) is in play as well, especially considering Shields' home run tendencies.

Chad Pinder, OAK at TEX ($2,900): Pinder has been a popular play the last couple of nights in Texas while facing a lefty, which will be the case again tonight against Martin Perez. After scoring a zero Tuesday, chances are his ownership will be down despite his salary still being below the $3,000 mark. Pinder has a .371 wOBA against lefties this season (.198 ISO) and should be hitting in the second spot behind Marcus Semien. Fellow outfielders Mark Canha ($2,700) and Khris Davis ($4,100) are great options at the position as well.

UTILITY

Jonathan Schoop, BAL vs BOS ($3,600): Given the alternatives, it makes sense to use a second baseman in the utility spot tonight, an unusual situation. Jed Lowrie ($3,200) is in play here as well, but Schoop's current form at the plate has been tough to ignore. He's had a home run in four of his last five games and has always hit lefties well. While David Price isn't an ideal matchup, the southpaw has allowed six home runs over 68 innings on the road this season, leading to a 4.50 ERA.
