DraftKings MLB: Sunday Showdown Picks

DraftKings MLB: Sunday Showdown Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

With the NLCS taking a day off Sunday, we are left with Game 2 of the ALCS between the Yankees and Astros as the only contest on the docket. That also means we have a showdown contest on DraftKings, so let's discuss how things might play out.

Starting Pitchers

The Astros will send one of their co-aces to the mound in Justin Verlander ($11,600). He was roughed up in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Rays, allowing four runs across 3.2 innings. However, it's important to note he pitched on short rest. He'll be on normal rest here, so he's going to be difficult to resist adding to your entry despite his hefty price tag - even in the captain's spot.

Taking the mound for the Yankees will be James Paxton ($9,000), who actually started Game 1 of the ALDS against the Twins. He wasn't all that sharp, allowing three runs over 4.2 innings. His main problem was the fact he allowed two home runs. The good news is he produced a 29.4 percent strikeout rate during the season, so he's still someone to target at this reasonable price.

Correlations

The most popular stack is undoubtedly going to be the Astros. With a left-handed pitcher on the mound, the trio of Alex Bregman ($10,400), Jose Altuve ($9,800) and George Springer ($10,000) carry tremendous upside. While they all hit lefties well during the regular season, Bregman really stood out with his 205 wRC+ against them. If you're looking for a more cost-effective option on the Astros, Yuli Gurriel ($8,000) enjoyed a great regular season and has gone 6-for-21 during their playoff run. Even Robinson Chirinos ($5,400) offers some upside since he registered a 148 wRC+ against lefties this season.

One-Offs

Going with Verlander and an Astros' stack carries the most upside, but we have to pick at least one player from the Yankees to form a valid lineup. Based on his power upside, rolling with Giancarlo Stanton ($6,200) is something to at least consider. If there was one weakness with Verlander this season, it's that he allowed 1.5 HR/9. Although he's more expensive, Gleyber Torres ($7,600) is also very appealing and could even fill the captain's spot. He's wasted no time making his mark on the playoffs, hitting 8-for-17 with two home runs and four doubles across four games.
