Welcome to March! The NHL is giving us a warm welcome to the month with nine games on the docket. Here are some players to target, and to avoid, for your DFS lineups.
GOALIE
Darcy Kuemper, COL vs. NYI ($37): Kuemper has a 2.46 GAA and .920 save percentage in his first season with the Avalanche. Since the start of the new year he's posted a 2.13 GAA and .932 save percentage in 18 games. The Islanders have strong goaltending themselves, but the offense lacks punch. They've only scored 2.53 goals per game.
GOALIE TO AVOID
Ilya Sorokin, NYI at COL ($36): I said the Islanders have strong goaltending. Sorokin has a 2.23 GAA. However, being on the road facing the Avalanche is a much tougher matchup. Colorado has averaged 3.96 goals per game, which is second highest in the NHL.
CENTER
Mark Scheifele, WPG vs. MON ($21): Scheifele has tallied 42 points in 47 games. He also has 14 points with the extra man. Admittedly the Canadiens have done better defensively recently, but they still have a 3.74 GAA, which is highest in the NHL. They've also allowed 34.2 shots on net per contest.
CENTER TO AVOID
Dylan Larkin, DET vs. CAR ($24): Larkin has a nine-game point streak going, but I expect that to end Tuesday. The Hurricanes have the league's lowest GAA and best penalty kill. They've also only given up 28.8 shots on net per contest. Matchups don't get much tougher, even if the Wings are at home.
WING
Teuvo Teravainen, CAR at DET ($22): Teravainen has an eight-game point streak. He's also been incredible on the power play. The Finn has 22 power-play points in 47 games. Detroit has a bottom-10 penalty kill, and after allowing 10 goals in its last game it has a 3.58 GAA.
Jakub Voracek, CLM vs. NJD ($17): Voracek has started 61.0 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone, second most on the Blue Jackets. A bafflingly low 2.1 percent shooting rate has limited him to two goals, but he has 36 assists in 51 games. The Devils are in the bottom five in GAA, and they are also one of only two teams on a back-to-back Tuesday.
WINGS TO AVOID
Kirill Kaprizov, MIN vs. CGY ($28): Kaprizov has built upon his Calder-winning season, but his hefty salary will be hard to earn in this matchup. Jacob Markstrom has a 2.08 GAA and .925 save percentage. The Flames have also only allowed 29.0 shots on net per game.
Brady Tkachuk, OTT at TAM ($19): Tkachuk doesn't get a ton of attention playing in Ottawa, though he was the Senators' only All-Star, but he's tallied 17 goals this year. It'll be hard for him to add to that on the road in Tampa, assuming Andrei Vasilevskiy is in net. The Russian netminder has a 2.28 GAA and .921 save percentage.
DEFENSE
Tyson Barrie, EDM at PHI ($17): Barrie has regained his power-play prowess recently. He's averaged 2:47 per game with the extra man and notched 12 power-play points in 47 games. Additionally, three of his power-play points have come in his last five outings. The Flyers have a 3.40 GAA, and they also have a bottom-eight penalty kill.
Adam Boqvist, CLM vs. NJD ($12): The 21-year-old defenseman has already set a career high with 19 points. That includes 10 goals. If Zach Werenski is still out, Boqvist will likely see extended time on the power play as well. As I mentioned, the Devils have a bottom-five GAA, and they are on the road for the second leg of a back-to-back.
DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID
Moritz Seider, DET vs. CAR ($20): Seider is in the running for the Calder. That being said, Frederik Andersen is in the running for the Vezina. The Danish netminder has a 2.03 GAA and .930 save percentage. Throw in the fact the Hurricanes allow a mere 28.8 shots on net per contest, and Seider isn't likely to bolster his resume in this one.
Charlie McAvoy, BOS at ANA ($19): The Bruins are on the road for the second game of a back-to-back. McAvoy has picked up 15 of his 34 points with the extra man. However, the Ducks have a top-10 penalty kill. Anaheim's goaltending has been iffy recently, but since McAvoy is on a back-to-back and because the Ducks have been good on the penalty kill on the season I'm still hesitant.
