THE MEMORIAL

The Memorial demonstrated the value of driving accuracy, second shot accuracy (GIR) and a hot putter. Steve Stricker's driving accuracy (ranked third) gave him short grass lies, which greatly helped him reach Nicklaus's undulating greens. In 2009, Stricker was ranked first in putts-per-GIR, which further stimulated additional research that revealed Striker's consistent proximity to the hole generated the putting results.

This shows Stricker's high-level approach iron talents that produced a hole-in-one and a hole-out from the fairway for one of his three eagles, as well as giving him short-distant looks overall.

Also, Stricker is ranked third in bogey avoidance, Matt Kuchar is ranked eighth and Brandt Jobe is 15th. In birdies-per-round, Stricker is ranked second, Kuchar 12th and Jobe fourth. Remember these stats when assembling you roster for the U.S. Open where birdies are hard to find and bogeys are difficult to offset with birdies.

LAST YEAR'S St. JUDE

NOTE:Robert Garrigus and Robert Karlsson stats above for GIR and Putts-per-GIR are accurate -- rare coincidence.

Westwood eliminated Garrigus on the first extra hole when Garrigus bogied, then finally topped Karlsson with a birdie on the fourth extra hole. In regulation, Westwood made four putts longer than 25 feet and also made nine putts longer than 15 feet. Westwood's putter finally earned the win in timely situations.

Garrigus took a three-stroke lead as he teed off for his 72nd hole and totally blew it finishing with a water-soaked triple bogey. But his full last round showed four birdies, two bogeys and the aforementioned triple bogey.

THIS WEEK's St. JUDE

This week's St. Jude Classic requires strong ball striking (total driving and GIR) and expertise in scrambling. Playing in this year's St. Jude are the above players plus the rest of last year's top-10 except Jay Williamson:

Garrett Willis -- T4, 9-under
Shaun Micheel -- T4, 9-under
Heath Slocum -- 6, 8-under
Billy Mayfair -- 7, 7-under
Camilo Villegas -- T8, 7-under
Bob Estes -- T8, 6-under
D.J. Trahan -- T8, 6-under
Jay Williamson -- T8, 6-under
