2025 Fantasy Outlook
Schmidt took a step forward in 2023 as he joined the Yankee rotation, but was really beginning to shine in 2024 until a right lat strained derailed his season for three months. Schmidt, prior to that late May injury, was 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA and a 19.0 percent K-BB percentage and had reduced the home run rate that plagued him in 2023. Schmidt returned in September to make five starts, but the rust showed and he was not as crisp nor was he able to even garner a win in any of the five outings. Schmidt did make a repertoire adjustment from 2023, as he further leaned into the success of his new cutter to make it his primary weapon of choice. Schmidt threw cutters, sweepers, sinkers and knuckle-curves to both righties and lefties at near equal levels. That mixture helps keep hitters off-balance enough to put Schmidt in the top 20th percentile for avoiding barrels and better than average in avoiding hard contact. The lat strain could have been his body's reaction to his workload nearly tripling from 2022 to 2023, so the rest that the injury offered him in 2024 should help Schmidt get another strong start out of the gate. As long as he continues to utilize his quartet of offerings, as he has to both righties and lefties, the pieces are in place for him to combine the ingredients of success in previous seasons into one delicious 2025 season. Avoids arbitration with Yanks
Schmidt agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt will get a $1.57 million raise after he produced a career-best 2.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 93 strikeouts over 85.1 innings in 16 regular-season starts with New York in 2024. The right-hander also garnered a start in Game 3 of the World Series versus the Dodgers, allowing three earned runs over 2.2 innings. Schmidt will likely enter the 2025 campaign as a back-end starter behind Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Carlos Rodon.

2019
After securing a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day rotation last spring, Schmidt looked poised for an age-27 breakout. He did in some ways rise to the occasion, logging the highest innings total of any Yankees pitcher not named Gerrit Cole, but his ERA (4.64) and WHIP (1.35) were only mediocre and he made it past the sixth inning just three times in 32 starts. Schmidt has a well-rounded four-pitch arsenal, but none of those offerings have proven to be dominant against major-league competition up to this point. He had zero double-digit strikeout games in 2023. Leaving open the possibility that Schmidt could make some tweaks and achieve another level in 2024, he'll be worthy of late-round consideration in most standard fantasy drafts but probably isn't bankable enough yet for a mid-round reach.

Could be trade chip
The Yankees could use Schmidt or Luis Gil as a trade chip to acquire offensive help, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Max Fried added to the rotation, it sounds like the Yanks might deal a starting pitcher to help fill other needs. Feinsand says Schmidt would be the "most likely" of the two young hurlers the Yankees would part with in a trade. He lists Nolan Arenado and Cody Bellinger as potential targets, although Arenado reportedly would not be willing to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a deal to the Yankees. Schmidt is under team control for three more seasons.
