Canadian Open

The Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club course made few friends in the ranks of the PGA Tour players last week -- Tight fairways edged by harshly punitive deep rough enroute to small greens. Some highly ranked players missed the cut at 4-over, while others not regularly in the top 15, 10 or five places were carefully hitting fairways and greens.

Both Sean O'Hair and Kris Blanks had high putts-per-GIR stats that connect with playoffs -- See the Byron Nelson where Keegan Bradley tied with Ryan Palmer. Both O'Hair and Blanks had tight birdie-to-bogey ratios, a reflection of the course's difficulty in calm weather rather than having a tough weather week. This ran through the scorecards of the field. For the 72 holes, no player had a bogey-free round, attesting to the ever-so-prominent bogey presence.

Greenbrier Classic

Looking at this week's Greenbrier Classic, let's review Stuart Appleby's closing 59 in last year's tournament.

His round topped off a birdie-fest of the first order, which will be the situation this week as well after a week at the Canadian Open where the field was very short on birdies. Appleby's pressure-cooker putt for the career-topping 59 at the 72nd hole should be replayed to salute the ulcer builder of a putt.

Perhaps most impressive, Appleby had 21 birdies to just one bogey. A single bogey is mighty elusive -- the only winning golfer to post just one bogey this season is Fredrik Jacobson, who bogied just once on his way to capturing the Travelers Championship (see above).

Following Appleby's extraordinary 22-under final round were:

Jeff Overton - 21-under
Branden DeJonge - 17-under
Woody Austin - 15 under
Paul Stankowski - 15 under
Jimmy Walker - 15 under
Roger Tambellini - 15 under
D. A. Points - 15 under

Owners should select players comfortable with classically designed courses such as last week's Shaughnessy CC, Aronimink, Congressional, Muirfield Village (The Memorial Tournament). Like last week, driving accuracy is vital, par-4 birdie excellence, GIR and scrambling are very important and, as usual, above average putting is needed. Chances are the rough won't be as treacherous as last week.
