THE TRAVELERS
Fredrik Jacobson survived the storm-induced suspensions in the first two rounds while giving a clinic on bogey avoidance in all four rounds. On his 64th hole he made his first, and only, bogey for the week. Meanwhile he holed 21 birdies – a true highlight-reel performance.
In the statistics, Jacobson hit 85.7 percent of his fairways, 12 of 14, ranking as the best driving accuracy among winners in the 28 events to date. Also, his single bogey is the best (lowest) of the winner's performances.
He lived up to his reputation as a fine putter. His four-round putts-per-greens in regulation, 1.615-1.636-1.692-1.733: 1.673 is within 1/1000th of the 28-event average. His putts-per-round averaged 26.5, another strong stat.
You might mull over the question, "Did Jacobson 'win,' or did Moore lose it when he bogied the 72nd hole missing a four-foot putt?"
Both are in the field of the AT&T National this week. Moore finished second to Justin Rose there last year, so he probably will be one of the favorites.
AT&T NATIONAL
Last year at the AT&T, Justin Rose, with a four shot lead entering the final round, staggered home with two birdies and four bogeys, using 35 putts to squeak by Ryan Moore for the win by one shot. Stats usually don't show that. Rose had won The Memorial early in June in good style en route to a banner year.
Needed at Aronimink Golf Club is precision iron play (GIR) and keeping the ball below the hole on the tricky Bermuda greens. Good scrambling is required inasmuch as the green sides have been shaved. Last year, the rough was very difficult, so accuracy is important.
