Tournament Preview

The European Tour is back this week after a holiday break with the first event of 2020, the South African Open.  The tournament will be contested at Randpark Golf Club, as it was last year. Golfers will play the Bushwillow and Firethorn course the first two days, then play the weekend on Firethorn after the cut.  Bushwillow and Firethorn are both tree-lined, with tight fairways and water hazards throughout. Firethorn is the longer, more difficult course of the two. Accuracy off the tee and approach shots will be key this week.  The courses play at elevation, so the ball will travel well. There may be some rust after the break for many of the golfers. The end of year form and course history will guide the picks.

DraftKings Picks

Louis Oosthuizen - $12,000 (5/1)

All of the options at the top are the class of the field, but Oosthuizen is my favorite.  There is a significant price hike for him, but he's worth it. He is the defending champion playing on home soil, who won by six strokes last year.  He arrives in form and with little to no rust, having participated in the Presidents Cup. Last year, he led the field in birdies and could do so again this year.

Zander Lombard - $8,400 (33/1)

Lombard ended 2019 strong.  He missed only one cut in his last 13 starts.  It really looked like he found something in his game, and this should be an exciting year for him.  He has always been a bomber, but his accuracy has started to come around off the tee as well. Zander finished T15 at Randpark last year, look for him to improve on that this week.

Jeff Winther - $7,400 (80/1)

Winther had some encouraging tournaments last year.  His highest finish was T4 in Spain, back in October. He cooled off to end the year, but this appears to be a great spot for him to heat up again.  Winther has had good results at Randpark, both as this tournament and the Joburg Open. He finished T7 last year and T27 in 2018. He is one of the better putters on tour.

James Morrison - $7,300 (100/1)

Last year Morrison did not compete in the South African Open, but he did play at Randpark the year prior in the Joburg Open.  That year he finished T6, carding a 64 on Thursday. He ended 2019 with four made cuts in a row. His highest finish last year was solo fourth at KLM Open.  Morrisson is another golfer who appeared to find a turnaround in his game, and one to watch this week and throughout 2020.
