2024 Fantasy Outlook
The 2021 second-round pick has underwhelmed to begin his tenure in Carolina. After a promising second year in the NFL in which he posted a receiving line of 28-490-1, Marshall's production dropped tremendously last season (19-139-0), despite facing less competition in the Panthers' wide receiver room. The team added both Diontae Johnson and rookie first-rounder Xavier Legette this offseason, further burying Marshall on the WR depth chart. Marshall likely will see limited offensive work and compete with Jonathan Mingo and Ihmir Smith-Marsette to be the No. 4 wide receiver. Read Past Outlooks

Marshall agreed to a contract with San Francisco's practice squad Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Marshall didn't pan out with the Panthers after being selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft and went unclaimed after being waived by Carolina on Tuesday, but he could benefit from a change of scenery. The 49ers have seven wide receivers on their 53-man roster, but Jauan Jennings (oblique) and Ricky Pearsall (shoulder) are both battling injuries heading into Week 1, while Brandon Aiyuk held out in training camp due to a contract dispute that has yet to be resolved.

2021
After being frozen out to begin his second season in 2022, Marshall got more involved as the year unfolded, finishing with 28 catches (on 47 targets) for 490 yards and one touchdown in 14 appearances. While the Panthers dealt top wideout DJ Moore to the Bears this offseason, Marshall faces plenty of new competition for first-team snaps. Along with veteran signings (and expected starters) Adam Thielen, DJ Chark and Hayden Hurst, WR Jonathan Mingo was scooped up in the second round of this year's draft. As a result, Marshall may be the fourth or fifth option for rookie quarterback Bryce Young in the upcoming campaign.
A second-round pick last year, Marshall went ice cold after a decent start to his career. While missing four games along the way, he went 10 weeks between catches at one point. The dry spell restricted him to 17 receptions on 30 targets for 138 yards and no touchdowns in 13 appearances. Heading into Year 2, he's expected to compete with veteran signing Rashard Higgins to serve as the Panthers' third wide receiver behind DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson.
Marshall put up big numbers over seven games at LSU last season before opting out in November — 71-48-731-10. At 6-3, 200, he’s tall, fast — clocking an unofficial 4.38 40 at the LSU Pro Day — and athletic (39-inch vertical). He was one of the top high school recruits in the country before landing at LSU and often lined up in the slot for the Tigers, where his size was a big advantage over nickel corners. He will ply his trade in Carolina this year, taking over the role of the departed Curtis Samuel. That makes him the No. 3 receiving option behind DJ Moore and Robby Anderson, and don’t forget RB Christian McCaffrey is likely to siphon 100-plus targets again now that he’s healthy.

Marshall is a candidate to be traded, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
An offseason trade for Diontae Johnson and the selection of Xavier Legette with the 32nd overall pick in the 2024 Draft might not leave any room for Marshall at wide receiver, despite the fact that he was a second-round pick himself in 2021. The LSU product has dealt with injuries during his three seasons with Carolina and has been unable to establish himself as a reliable downfield option, but he's looked healthy in training camp. A reunion in Buffalo with offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was on the Panthers' staff when Marshall was drafted, could make sense for both teams.
