Avery Williams

Avery Williams

26-Year-Old Running BackRB
Atlanta Falcons
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Williams is coming off a lost 2023 season after tearing his ACL during an offseason workout. In 2022, he rushed 22 times for 109 yards and a touchdown while securing 13 of 14 targets for 61 yards. He also totaled 313 kick-return yards and 292 punt-return yards. Williams is competing with 2023 UDFA Carlos Washington for a 53-man roster spot, but the former's return abilities likely give him the upper hand. Read Past Outlooks

Strictly special teams in Week 7
RBAtlanta Falcons
October 23, 2024
Williams brought back a kickoff for 21 yards and played all 23 of his snaps on special teams in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Though he's listed as a running back, Williams hasn't logged any touches out of the backfield since the 2022 season and is on the Falcons' roster solely due to his role as a kickoff and punt returner. Until Sunday, Jase McClellan had been inactive as the Falcons' No. 4 running back, but the rookie sixth-round pick suited up against the Seahawks and ended up getting five carries in garbage time, rather than Williams, when Atlanta rested top backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier late in the game.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Williams was slated to be Atlanta's primary return man and a depth running back in 2023, but the 2021 fifth-round pick tore his ACL during an offseason workout and underwent season-ending surgery in June. In Williams' absence, Cordarrelle Patterson will presumably take over as the Falcons' primary kick returner, while Mike Hughes and Josh Ali compete for punt-return duties.
Williams was drafted out of Boise State as a defensive back, but as a rookie, he made the biggest impact as a return man, totaling 490 kick-return yards and 152 punt-return yards. The Falcons are hoping to capitalize on Williams' return skills by transitioning him to offense during his second NFL season, similar to how Atlanta revitalized Cordarrelle Patterson's career last year. The move appears to be paying off, as Williams has turned heads at training camp with his ability as a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. However, he likely has a steep learning curve before he's trusted as a third-down option.

Could see increased role in Week 2
RBAtlanta Falcons
September 17, 2022
With Damien Williams on IR due to a rib injury, Avery could see an increased role in Atlanta's offense moving forward, Scott Bair of the Falcons' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Avery Williams transitioned from defense to running back this offseason and has excelled at his new position so far. He operated as the No. 3 RB behind Damien Williams and Cordarrelle Patterson during the season opener and could be in store for a promotion in Week 2 with Damien Williams ruled out. However, rookie fifth-round pick Tyler Allgeier is also a candidate to make his NFL debut and projects as a more likely option to fill in as the primary backup. The Falcons also elevated Caleb Huntley from the practice squad, but he's expected to be an emergency depth option.
