College Football Fantasy Five: Week of May 3

College Football Fantasy Five: Week of May 3

This article is part of our College Football Fantasy Five series.

Even though there are no official college football games being played, it doesn't mean that we can't start preparing for the 2021 fantasy college football season. I've scrubbed the current headlines and here's a countdown of the top five stories with fantasy implications.

5.) QB N'Kosi Perry Transfers to Florida Atlantic

Perry doesn't have to travel very far as he moves from Miami to Florida Atlantic where he will compete for the starting job right away in Willie Taggart's second-year offense. Taggart and the Owls did not have a great year in 2020 as they ranked 116th in the nation with 18.9 points per game which was down dramatically from 36.4 points per game (14th) under Lane Kiffin in 2019. Prior to taking over at Florida Atlantic, Taggart was with Florida State in 2018-2019 and also struggled on the offensive side of the ball. He didn't have great quarterbacks in any of those last three campaigns, so I'm not saying he's doomed with Perry, but it could be an uphill battle for consistent offensive production which means that it's a wait-and-see situation for fantasy purposes.

4.) Lance Leipold Takes Over at Kansas

Leipold will be the new brave soul who tries to turn around a Kansas program which has been one of the worst in all of college football. He's been in Buffalo the last six seasons where he transformed that program from mediocre to a MAC powerhouse who won the conference in two of the last three seasons. Moreover, they've been in three straight bowl games, winning the last two. It will take him a couple of years to have that type of effect in Lawrence, so I wouldn't get too excited for the next season until he starts getting some of his recruits there.

3.) Nothing Serious for QB Jarrett Guarantano at Washington State

The projected starter at Washington State had an injury scare in the team's spring game a couple of weeks ago. This turned out to not be a big deal as he returned to practice this last week which will make prospective fantasy owners express a sigh of relief. Guarantano is going to be surrounded by some serious offensive talent like RB Max Borghi and WR Travell Harris, so keep him on your short list for the upcoming season.

2.) Spring Game Stats for QBs Casey Thompson & Hudson Card at Texas

Thompson – 23/42 for 242 yards and two INTs
Card – 15/25 for 168 yards and one TD

The youngster Card likely won this round of the highly-anticipated QB battle as one of Thompson's interceptions was a pick-six for defensive back D'Shawn Jamison. Because the Longhorns are dealing with a new head coach in Steve Sarkisian and I'm not quite sure which way to lean on the quarterback battle, I would be fully entrenched in picking RB Bijan Robinson with an early first-round pick. I believe it's likely that Thompson and Card play this year which would make Robinson that much more attractive as a fantasy investment because he's going to be the most consistent option in what should be a fruitful fantasy offense.

1.) Stocks Rising for WRs Jalen Tolbert at South Alabama

I was a big fan of Tolbert & Baker last year, however, they were held back at times by poor quarterback play. That's all going to change this year as Creg Stephenson of AL.com just recently reported that Utah transfer, Jake Bentley, has been named the starter for the 2021 season. With Desmond Trotter at quarterback in 2020, Tolbert & Kawaan Baker combined for 115 catches for 1,744 yards and 16 touchdowns. In a fantasy-friendly Sun Belt conference, I would make sure to get some shares of Bentley, and Tolbert as they could have huge years on the gridiron.
