Last season marked Avdija's first away from Washington - the franchise that drafted him No. 9 overall in 2020. His role was expected to decline in Portland. At first, it did. The forward came off the bench for 18 of his first 30 appearances, seeing just 26.4 minutes per game. However, he became a full-time starter from Dec. 28 onward, averaging 19.7 points and 1.9 threes on 49/37/78 shooting, 8.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.6 minutes. Impressively, Avdija reached both career highs in assists-included usage rate (23.8%) and true-shooting percentage (60.5%). Arguably, the biggest stride in his game was creating for himself off the dribble to finish at the rim. He took 6.2 free throws per 36 minutes, which ranked 12th in the NBA, and was up from his prior season of 4.4 free throws per 36. With Anfernee Simons now in Boston and Deandre Ayton on the Lakers, a lot of usage has opened up in Portland. Some of that will presumably go to Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Jrue Holiday. But Avdija may be able to expand his role more, too. At the very least, Avdija should be able to maintain what he accomplished across the whole of last season - 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.0 steals in 30.0 minutes. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Avdija was born Jan. 3, 2001 in Beit Zera, Israel. His father, Zufer, was a professional basketball player. His mother, Sharon, was also a basketball player, plus a track and field athlete. Avdija holds dual citizenship between Israel and Sebia -- his father is a Serbian citizen. Avdija originally played soccer, but focused on basketball in the fourth grade. From 2017 to 2019, Avdija led the Maccabi Tel Aviv hoops squad to three consecutive Israeli youth state championships. In August 2018 in Belgrade, he participated in Basketball Without Borders Europe, where he earned camp MVP honors. After three seasons on Israel's junior national team, Avdija joined the senior team in February of 2019. When Avdija turned 18, he received a deferment from mandatory military service in Israel due to his basketball career. However, he was drafted into a short service program in April of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic suspending basketball. Avdija began his professional career in Israel with Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv in 2017-18, though appeared in just three games that season. The following year, he fluctuated between the main club and the Junior Team, averaging 6.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 12.5 minutes. That season (2018-19), he was voted to the Munich Tournament (ANGT) All-Tournament Team and the NIJT All-Tournament Team. Avdija's role expanded the following season, as he started 26 of 59 appearances, averaging 9.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 21.7 minutes. As a result of his excellent play, he was given the Israeli BSL MVP. Avdija's best performance that season was June 21 in a win over Maccabi Ashdod, where he recorded 23 points (7-9 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 7-8 FT), seven rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block in just 24 minutes.

Avdija has been sidelined for the Trail Blazers' last three games due to a lower back strain. He had previously been listed as doubtful for those games, so the fact he's now listed as questionable indicates that he is progressing in his recovery. Jrue Holiday (calf) is listed as doubtful, and if he and Avdija were to be sidelined for Sunday's contest, then Caleb Love would likely step into Portland's starting lineup.

The No. 9 pick in the 2020 Draft, Avdija showed some flashes of breaking out at the end of the 2022-23 season and carried it over into a stellar 2023-24 campaign. The Israeli forward was one of Washington's best players last year, averaging 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.5 blocks and 1.2 threes per game. That was inevitably going to happen when examining the Wizards roster last year, but it remains to be seen how he'll look in Portland. The Trail Blazers traded for him in the offseason, and they have a much deeper rotation than Washington. Both clubs are terrible, but Avdija will have to battle Anfernee Simons, Jerami Grant, Scoot Henderson and Deandre Ayton for touches. Those four players are probably better than anyone on the Washington roster, which will likely lead to a slight decline for Avdija. We didn't even mention Shaedon Sharpe, which has us wondering if Avdija will even start this season. With that said, this is a 23-year-old forward coming off a career year, and he could be one of the focal points of the Blazer's offense if they continue to go into rebuild mode. With so many questions surrounding Portland, reaching for Avdija could be risky, but he could certainly outperform his ADP if handed 30-plus minutes a night.
Avdija's role was a constant source of frustration for managers during the 2022-23 season, making him a hard player to roster confidently. The Wizards finally tore things down, parting ways with Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis. This alone should ensure that Avdija sees consistent minutes this season, putting him firmly on the standard league radar. He finished just inside the top 200 last season, compiling averages of 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 0.9 steals. However, he was given a larger role down the stretch, scoring at least 15 points in five consecutive games to end the month of March. In that span, he averaged 18.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.0 steals in around 34.0 minutes per game. Granted, this is a tiny sample size, making it hard to jump to any conclusions. But it highlights his ability to play as a point-forward who can score and facilitate. The Wizards have brought in a couple of new pieces, namely Tyus Jones and Jordan Poole, who complicate matters. That said, Avdija has done enough to at least earn himself a shot at a significant role. If he can carve out upwards of 26 minutes per game, he makes for a viable late-round flier, even in competitive formats.
Avdija slotted in as a key bench piece for the Wizards for a second straight season in 2021-22 and saw a slight expansion of his playing time to 24.2 minutes per contest. He also increased his shot volume and efficiency across the board. Avdija's most notable jump in efficiency came at the free-throw line, where he knocked down his shots at a 75.7 percent clip compared to just 64.4 percent as a rookie. That improvement, combined with an increase from 0.8 to 1.7 free-throw attempts per contest, aided his bump from 6.3 points per game as a rookie in 2020-21 to 8.4 per game last year. That said, except for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the Wizards return all of their biggest contributors from last season and added Johnny Davis with the 10th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Avdija presents fairly vanilla production across the board but shouldn't hurt managers in any particular area. Still, his mediocre production likely makes him a viable fantasy option primarily in deeper formats.
In Avdija's rookie season with the Wizards, the forward showcased his potential as an effective rebounder and three-point specialist. The 20-year-old started in 32 games and averaged 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.6 steals in 23.3 minutes. Avdija managed to make 41.7 percent from the field and 31.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc while he struggled to find consistency from three-point range. An ankle fracture late in the season forced the forward to miss the team's final 21 games. This upcoming season, Avdija will face an uphill battle for playing time, as the Wizards acquired depth at the wing. Kyle Kuzma and Corey Kispert will compete to take minutes away from Advija, while Davis Bertans will also be in the mix.
Avdija has sneaky upside that could eventually make him an impactful scorer in the league. The forward can put the ball on the ground and attack the rim with force while also playing the pick-and-roll game and knocking down a three. Avdija averaged 9.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 33.3 percent from three in Europe. To begin the 2020-21 campaign, Avdija could find himself in the starting lineup at small forward, though he'll have to beat out Troy Brown and Isaac Bonga in training camp. Still, Avdija likely needs more time to develop into a legitimate impact player, so he projects as a bit of a flier in deeper leagues for the time being.
