Wembanyama registers first career triple-double in win over Pistons
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons, 130-108, at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday.

In a battle of the two worst teams in the NBA, it was the Spurs (6-30) who got off to the fast start with a 31-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two teams traded buckets in the second quarter as San Antonio took a 12-point lead into halftime. Detroit (3-35) weren’t able to make headway in the second half, as they were down by double digits for the last 24 minutes of the game. The Spurs closed it out in the fourth quarter to capture their fourth road win of the year, while the Pistons dropped to 2-16 at home. The Spurs dominated at the foul line, shooting 23-for-27 from the charity stripe while the Pistons went 10-for-13.

It was a balanced scoring attack for the Spurs, with eight players scoring in double digits, though none scored more than 20. Victor Wembanyama, the first overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double. Keldon Johnson led San Antonio off the bench with 17 points, three assists and two steals, while Doug McDermott had 14 points in reserve and made four of his five three-point attempts. Devin Vassell chipped in 16 points, three rebounds and five assists, while Jeremy Sochan added 15 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Jalen Duren led the Pistons with 21 points, 12 rebounds and two assists for his 18th double-double of the season. Jaden Ivey filled up the stat sheet with 19 points, three rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals, while Bojan Bogdanovic added 19 points, two rebounds and two assists. Alec Burks led the bench with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Kevin Knox chipped in 12 points and four rebounds off the pine.

With Wednesday’s game in the books, both teams will next play Friday, Jan. 12. The Spurs will head back home to take on the Charlotte Hornets, while the Pistons host the Houston Rockets.
