Murphy alternated between the starting unit and the bench in 2023-24. While his efficiency decreased, the third-year wing delivered a career-best season statistically. Across 57 regular-season appearances and 23 starts, Murphy averaged career-high marks in points (14.8), rebounds (4.9) and assists (2.2) per game while also putting up a combined 1.4 steals-plus-blocks in 29.6 minutes. That kind of production is solid across any fantasy format, and Murphy should be a reliable contributor once again. Even though there's no clear path to the starting lineup unless one of CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram or Dejounte Murray get injured, Murphy should log enough minutes to make his presence count off the bench. Murphy is particularly valuable in category-based leagues, as he doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. He can contribute across the five major categories while shooting the ball at an accurate clip, including from three, where he's made at least 38 percent of his attempts in his three years in the league. Fantasy managers would be wise to wait until the second half of their drafts to target Murphy, but he's a player who could deliver excellent value related to his APD if he continues the upward trajectory he's shown in the last two seasons. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Kenneth "Trey" Murphy III was born in June of 2000 in Durham, North Carolina. He is the son of Kenneth and Albeda Murphy. His father Kenneth played college basketball at East Carolina. For prep school, Trey attended Cary Academy in Cary, North Carolina. At Cary, as a senior, Trey was named to the All-Metro team by the Raleigh News & Observer. He then committed to play college ball at Rice, where he played for two seasons. In his first season with Rice (2018-19), Murphy played 20.6 minutes per game and was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. As a sophomore, Murphy led Rice in scoring and started 23 of 29 games. The tall guard then transferred to the University of Virginia for the 2020-21 season. With the Cavaliers, Murphy started 20 of 25 games, made the All-ACC Academic Team and delivered a rare 50-40-90 season (50.3 FG%, 43.3 3Pt%, 92.7% FT%). In July of 2021, Murphy declared for the NBA Draft. He was selected with the 17th pick by the Memphis Grizzlies, but was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a three-team deal that included Jonas Valanciunas and Stephen Adams. October 24, 2024
The Pelicans announced Thursday that Murphy (hamstring) has progressed through the first phase of rehabilitation, has been cleared to begin the return-to-play conditioning phase of the rehab process and will have his status updated in approximately two weeks.
ANALYSIS Murphy continues to deal with a right hamstring strain and will miss at least the first two weeks of the regular season. Until Murphy is officially cleared to return, Jordan Hawkins and Javonte Green should continue to receive increased playing time.

2022
2021
Murphy enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign in 2022-23. After starting in just one of his 65 appearances as a rookie, he started in 65 of his 79 appearances last season. The 23-year-old forward averaged 14.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 31.0 minutes. What stood out the most from his production was his efficiency. Murphy posted 48.4/40.6/90.5 shooting splits, including 6.4 three-point attempts per contest. His availability was another key factor in his fantasy value, as few players in the league missed three games or fewer last year. However, that's changed. Murphy suffered a meniscus injury in early September which required surgery, and he's expected to be out until mid-to-late November. The Pelicans' roster is largely unchanged going into 2023-24 -- the only difference being Zion Williamson expected to come into the season healthy. With Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum on the team, Murphy is unlikely to have the ball in his hands often. However, if New Orleans' stars can stay on the floor, Murphy should have the opportunity to receive even more open looks from three and potentially improve upon his already outstanding efficiency. Combined with his defensive production, Murphy is a fine late-round target, but be prepared for him to miss the first month of games.
Despite ending his rookie season outside the top 350, Murphy played well during the playoffs and appears to be someone the Pelicans could prioritize moving forward. He suited up for two games in 2022 Summer League, averaging 26.5 points, shooting an impressive 50 percent from the floor and 88 percent from the line. His exact role remains a little clouded, although managers will want to keep an eye on where he fits during the preseason. If we can be relatively certain that he logs 25 minutes per night, he could be worth a look as a late-round flier, even in competitive drafts.
The 17th overall pick in the 2021 Draft, Murphy is considered one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the class. After turning heads at Summer League in Las Vegas, Murphy appears poised to compete for a rotation spot right away on a revamped Pelicans roster. He has some roadblocks in front of him -- namely, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and Garrett Temple -- but Murphy will likely be able to carve out a role off the bench. Three-point shooting is the 21-year-old's calling card, but he can also add some value as a rebounder and free throw shooter. At Virginia last season, Murphy went 38-of-41 (92.7%) at the charity stripe.

Priority for New Orleans
FNew Orleans Pelicans
May 23, 2024
Signing Murphy to a contract extension in the summer should be among the Pelicans' priorities for the offseason, according to Christian Clark of NOLA.com.
ANALYSIS The Pelicans will have to break their bank to keep Murphy around, as the small forward could receive a contract that might fall in the range of the four-year, $94.5 million deal Cameron Johnson signed with the Nets as a floor and a five-year, $135 million pact like the one Devin Vassell signed with the Spurs as a ceiling. Murphy is expected to play a prominent role for New Orleans in the 2024-25 season and could even be a regular starter if the team decides to cut ties with Brandon Ingram, which is also possible, according to Clark.
