Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Dalano Banton was born in Toronto, Canada on November 7th, 1999. He is the son of Damian Banton and Suzanne English. Banton grew up in the Toronto neighborhood of Rexdale and played basketball at multiple local community centers. As a kid, he once attended a Rexdale basketball camp hosted by former Raptor DeMar DeRozan. Banton played ball at three different high schools. He started at Central Toronto Academy, then transferred south to first MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts and then Redemption Christian Academy in Northfield, Massachusetts. As a senior at Redemption, he was named the conference MVP. In the fall of 2017, Banton committed to Western Kentucky University. The guard played one season (2018-19) for WKU, then transferred to the University of Nebraska. After sitting out the 2019-20 season, Banton appeared in 27 games for the Cornhuskers in 2020-21 and averaged 9.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.9 blocks over 27.3 minutes per game. He also had two triple-double games. In July of 2021, the guard declared for the 2021 NBA Draft. Banton was selected with the 46th overall pick by his hometown Toronto Raptors and quickly signed a multi-year contract.
Staying in Portland
GPortland Trail Blazers
June 29, 2024
The Trail Blazers exercised Banton's $2.2 million team option for the 2024-25 season Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS Banton will return to Portland for his first full season with the Trail Blazers after he was acquired from the Celtics in Feb. 8. While Portland shut down several key contributors with injuries late last season, the 24-year-old stepped into a focal role for Portland, averaging 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 0.9 steals over 30 contests with the club. Though he played well enough to stick around in Portland in 2024-25 and may even have earned himself a rotation spot, Banton is still expected to see a steep role reduction if the Trail Blazers have the likes of Jerami Grant (hamstring), Shaedon Sharpe (abdomen) and Anfernee Simons (knee) available to begin the upcoming season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
2021
After two seasons in Toronto, Banton signed a two-year deal with the Celtics shortly after Boston dealt Marcus Smart to the Grizzlies. At 6-foot-7, the 2021 second-round pick fits Boston's affection for tweener guards. One could argue there wasn't a true point guard on the roster until Boston made a surprise move to add Jrue Holiday before training camp. After all the offseason moves, Banton is slated to compete with shoot-first three-point gunner Payton Pritchard for backup minutes behind Holiday and Derrick White. At 6-foot-1, Pritchard is the lone "typical" sized guard in the rotation. FastPP's defensive labilities could open the door for Banton to see double-digit minutes per game. But 11 minutes per contest is probably Banton's ceiling on this very talented roster unless the other guards suffer injuries. If that happens, Banton will still need to improve his 41.1 career shooting percentage to receive major minutes.
Banton recorded just 11 minutes per game during his rookie season, rounding out as the 487th ranked player. While he did have some nice moments, it's hard to see him leapfrogging anyone in the rotation, at least to the point where he becomes fantasy relevant. Should the team suffer through a couple of injuries to their backcourt, perhaps he moves up the pecking order, making him a name to at least monitor in very deep formats.
Banton was selected by the Raptors with the 46th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. The Canadian guard spent his final two college seasons at Nebraska, where he averaged 9.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.0 steals per game last season. A unique, 6-foot-9 point guard, Banton's jumpshot is a mess (24.7 3P%), but he's an interesting prospect for Toronto to develop.

Could be trade chip
GBoston Celtics
January 9, 2024
Banton had his $2.02 million salary for 2023-24 fully guaranteed when he remained on Boston's roster Monday, but he could still be included in a trade later this season, Brian Robb of MassLive reports.
ANALYSIS The Celtics could have waived the 24-year-old guard rather than letting his contract become fully guaranteed, but they elected to keep Banton around for backcourt depth, and to potentially add to a trade package for salary-matching purposes, even though he's had trouble earning a regular spot in the rotation. Luke Kornet, Svi Mykhailiuk and Lamar Stevens also had their salaries become guaranteed Monday after they weren't waived.
