Transaction Analysis: Votto Returns to Reds

This article is part of our Transaction Analysis series.

Here's a look at the transactions this week that had the most significant fantasy impact.

Blue Jays

Anthony Gose, OF - recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas

Impact: Although Gose wasn't able to do much with the bat in his earlier stint with the Jays this year, he did manage to swipe 10 bags in just 28 games. With Jose Bautista out for the season, there is an opportunity in Toronto for Gose to get a fair amount of playing time as the team plays out the remainder of its schedule. Based on his minor league history, his offensive struggles could continue, though the speed is definitely for real.

Diamondbacks

Adam Eaton, OF - contract purchased from Triple-A Reno

Impact: With D-Backs center fielder Chris Young nursing a sore right quad, Eaton is finally getting a chance to prove himself at the major league level. The 23-year-old outfielder hit an impressive .381 with 119 runs scored and 38 stolen bases in 119 games at Triple-A Reno this year, earning him the Pacific Coast League's MVP award. Young is expected to miss just three to seven days with his injury, but Eaton should obviously be a more-than-capable replacement in the event that the injury is more serious than anticipated. As with most young players, some growing pains could be expected, but Eaton is definitely worth a look in many fantasy league formats.

Orioles

Zach Britton, LHP - recalled from Triple-A Norfolk

Impact: Britton rejoined the O's on Tuesday after a very brief stint in the minors and was very sharp as Baltimore clobbered the Blue Jays 12-0. He threw seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters. Over his last four starts, the 24-year-old lefty is 4-0 with an ERA of just 0.94 and 29 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. He missed the entire first half of the 2012 season due to injuries, but that doesn't seem to have slowed him any.

Reds

Joey Votto, 1B - activated from the 15-day DL

Impact: Votto missed about seven weeks due to a knee injury that required two operations. While the Reds will probably give him the occasional day off to keep him healthy, he's still worth activating in any fantasy league format. All Votto has done over the last four seasons is hit .312 while averaging 29 home runs and 96 RBI per season. He returns to a .342 average, 14 home runs and 49 RBI, and has doubled a whopping 36 times in just 86 games this year. Todd Frazier should get bumped to a part-time role, as manager Dusty Baker said Scott Rolen will not lose his third-base job to Frazier.

White Sox

Alejandro De Aza, OF - activated from the 15-day DL

Impact: The White Sox leadoff hitter and center fielder has been a big part of Chicago's playoff chase this year. De Aza hit .281 with 73 runs scored and 21 stolen bases in 111 games before missing a couple of weeks with bruised ribs. He homered in his first game back and then stole two bases the following day, so he's obviously healthy enough to be activated in all fantasy formats. DeWayne Wise figures to lose playing time as a result of De Aza being activated, though he should still get a fair amount of ABs over the season's final month.

Yankees

Alex Rodriguez, 3B - activated from the 15-day DL

Impact: Rodriguez missed almost six weeks due to a fractured left hand before returning to action Monday. The 37-year-old third baseman still swings a decent bat when he's healthy, but his health and his overall productivity seem to be dwindling with age. He returns to a .276 average, 15 home runs and 44 RBI through 94 games. Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix figure to lose some playing time as a result of A-Rod's return.
