Gilmore heads to his fourth team in as many years after an offseason trade from the Colts to the Cowboys, but the 32-year-old isn't just coasting on his reputation. While he wasn't the shutdown corner for Indianapolis in 2022 that he was in his heyday with Buffalo and New England, he did hold the opposition to a respectable QB rating on balls thrown his way (74.0), and offenses facing Dallas in 2023 could have a tough decision to make whether to attack Gilmore or Trevon Diggs.
Gilmore missed 14 games over the past two seasons, but he's also just three years removed from a Defensive Player of the Year award (2019, with New England). The Patriots traded the 31-year-old to Carolina last fall while he was recovering from quad surgery, and he played eight games for the Panthers (three starts, two INTs) before missing the final two weeks with a groin injury and COVID-19. The Colts saw enough in the limited action to believe Gilmore can still be a high-quality starter, joining Kenny Moore to give the team a second playmaker at cornerback.
The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Gilmore saw his numbers fall last season, as the cornerback, who turns 31 in September, logged 37 tackles and one interception in 11 games. There were then trade rumors in the offseason, and he's now set to miss at least the first six games of 2021, after being placed on the PUP list due to a groin injury. Gilmore could rejoin the Patriots in October, or he might be traded around that same time.
Gilmore is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he logged 49 tackles and a career-high six picks. In the process, the 29-year-old was named AP Defensive Player of the Year. While Gilmore's value to the Patriots as a shut-down option is obvious, his IDP utility hinges on his luck in the ball-hawking department. A regression in that category is plausible in 2020, and in such a context Gilmore would fall into the category of players whose value in real terms doesn't necessarily translate to fantasy.
Expectations were high after Gilmore signed a five-year, $65 million contract with the Patriots last year, but the 27-year-old endured a rough start to his 2017 campaign. His play improved as the season rolled along, however, and the 27-year-old is poised to remain a mainstay in the New England secondary for the foreseeable future. On the heels of a season in which he notched 50 tackles and two interceptions in 13 games, Gilmore is a solid but not spectacular IDP option heading into the 2018 campaign.
Gilmore, who landed a five-year, $65 million contract with the Patriots that includes $40 million in guaranteed money, was widely viewed as the top cornerback on the free-agent market this offseason. The 6-1, 190-pounder, who the Bills selected 10th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, is coming off a 2016 campaign in which he recorded five picks and 48 tackles in 15 games, en route to earning his first Pro Bowl nod. He's slated to start at right cornerback for the Patriots opposite Malcolm Butler.
Gilmore is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the league when healthy, but staying healthy has been his problem considering he has missed 11 games during the past three seasons due to injury. That being said, Gilmore enters camp in 2016 with a clean bill of health, and if he is able to stay healthy, should become a very nice IDP option this season.
Gilmore is a talented corner and one of the leaders of the Bills' secondary. As one of the more unheralded stars in the league he is a possible value pick in deep IDP drafts.
After being a high draft pick and having a strong rookie season, Gilmore took a step back in 2013. Now entering his third season, Gilmore is still entrenched as a starter and will have a chance to prove that he should be considered a top corner in the league. He has all of the talent, tools, and opportunity for a breakout season... he just has to put it all together.
Gilmore established himself as the Bills' top corner as a rookie last season, recording 61 tackles (52 solo), 16 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one interception.
The No. 10 pick in the 2012 draft, the rookie will have a legitimate chance to start in his first season. The two starting CB spots are thought to be between Gilmore, Aaron Williams, Terrence McGee, and Leodis McKelvin, though the first two are thought to be the early favorites. Gilmore isn't incredibly quick and doesn't have speedy hips, but his size and straightaway speed rate really high and he plays a physical game the Bills should be able to utilize for years.

Backup for Stokes in Green Bay?
CBFree Agent
June 22, 2024
Before the start of training camp, Aaron Schatz of ESPN.com believes the Packers should sign Gilmore to provide depth at cornerback behind Eric Stokes.
ANALYSIS
Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander is the clear top cornerback for Green Bay, but questions surround Stokes, who played just three games in 2023 due to a lingering hamstring injury. Adding Gilmore to provide depth at corner would give the Packers experience at that position that Corey Ballentine and Carrington Valentine cannot. Gilmore spent last season with the Cowboys and finished with a career-best 68 tackles along with 13 pass deflections, two interceptions and one forced fumble over 17 regular-season games.
