Johnson took a few games to acclimate to the NFL, then got rolling before his rookie campaign was cut short by a Lisfranc injury in his foot. The 2024 fourth-round draft pick out of Penn State recorded at least three catches for 30 yards seven times in an eight-game span prior to sitting out the Giants’ final five games of 2024. Despite the serious nature of the injury he suffered last year, Johnson projects to pick up where he left off atop the depth chart after the Giants declined to add TE help this offseason. He wasn't a prolific pass catcher at Penn State while splitting time with Brenton Strange and then Tyler Warren, but Johnson does offer an unusual combination of size and raw athleticism, having lit up the 2024 Combine with a 4.57 40-yard dash and 38.5-inch vertical jump at 6-foot-6, 259 pounds. The Giants saw enough to prioritize other positions this offseason, making Johnson the favorite to start at TE again and a candidate to emerge as a useful complementary target behind No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers. Dealing with toe injury
Johnson missed Wednesday's practice with a toe injury, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The good news is that his toe is listed as the problem, rather than his foot. Johnson had Lisfranc surgery on his foot last December, bringing his rookie season to an early end. He returned healthy for spring practices and has now picked up where he left off in a near-every-down role -- with an 87 percent snap share through three weeks -- but Johnson still isn't getting many targets, with a 10 percent share ranking fifth on the team. An absence for Week 4 against the Chargers would mean more work for Daniel Bellinger, who also has an established track record of low target rates.

The Giants took Johnson, a Penn State product, in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Darren Waller announced his retirement less than two months later, leaving Johnson and 2022 fourth-round draft pick Daniel Bellinger as the team's main receiving threats at tight end. Johnson never had more than 341 receiving yards in a college season, but he used his 6-foot-6, 259-pound frame effectively in the red zone, scoring seven touchdowns in 2023. His 4.57-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine was especially impressive for a player of his size, suggesting Johnson has the physical tools to contribute more as a pass catcher at the NFL level. First, the 23-year-old rookie will need to earn a role, which will partially depend on his blocking.
