Premier League Golden Boot Watch

Premier League Golden Boot Watch

This article is part of our Soccer Picks series.

The first gameweek of the new Premier League is complete, and while Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Burnley didn't play, the race for the 2020/21 Golden Boot is officially on. Looking back at our pre-season list of odds, we unsurprising see movement at the top after Liverpool's Mohamed Salah bagged a hat trick against newly promoted Leeds United, making him the new favorite to finish as the league's highest scorer after initially trailing both Harry Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on DraftKings Sportsbook (in fairness to Salah, he was the leader on betMGM and bet365 when we first looked on Sept. 2).

Aubameyang did find the back of the net against newly promoted Fulham, but he sits two goals behind Salah and one behind Leicester City's Jamie Vardy, who converted both of his penalty attempts against newly promoted (see a theme here?) West Brom. Two of Salah's three goals were also from the penalty spot, as we continue to see their importance for those trying to win this coveted award.

Salah has moved from +600 to +350 on DraftKings thanks to his hat trick, while some players who didn't play saw their odds worsen, such as Sergio Aguero from +600 to +1200 (he's injured right now, which doesn't help), Raheem Sterling from +1100 to +1200, Gabriel Jesus from +1600 to +2000, Bruno Fernandes from +1600 to +2500 and Mason Greenwood from +2500 to +3300. Interestingly, those players still have 38 games to play, so it's not like they were blank in Gameweek 1 for lack of scoring.

We also saw a number of additions to the DraftKings list (I'm sticking with DraftKings only for my own manual data importing sanity) since the initial look, with Callum Wilson +4000 after scoring in his Newcastle debut, Kai Havertz +5000, Son Heung-Min +6600, Rhian Brewster +6600 (huh?), Ollie Watkins +8000, Donny van de Beek +15000, James Rodriguez +15000, Lucas Moura +20000, Naby Keita +25000 all included now. I don't think any of them have a great shot at winning the Golden Boot, but having more options is good, I guess.
