Extension or trade both possible
The Rams hope to reach a contract agreement with Stafford (ribs) but may try to trade him if the two sides can't agree on numbers, Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire reports.
ANALYSIS
NFL Network's Tom Telissero reported Friday that the Rams recently gave Stafford's agent permission to talk with other teams to help assess the QB's value. The idea, it would seem, is for the Rams to figure out if they're willing to pay Stafford as much as another team would, which can move negotiations forward (or not). His contract was also an issue last offseason, when Stafford had three years remaining without any guaranteed money. The Rams adjusted his contract in July, but now they have a similar situation at hand, with Stafford scheduled to make $27 million and $31 million for the final two years of his contract. Those figures are way below market value for a competent starting QB, but that's partially because Stafford received a huge signing bonus in 2022 and a restructure bonus in 2024, which is reflected in his cap hits for the next two seasons ($49.7 million and $53.7 million). An extension would allow the Rams to lower those cap hits while making Stafford happy, but it would also mean adding to the eventual dead-money cap charge when he's retired or released. Stafford turned 37 earlier in February, and right now it's not clear he'll be back in Los Angeles for 2025.

Stafford bounced back somewhat from an injury-riddled 2022 campaign but still was only QB15 in fantasy last season. That might be his ceiling at this point, though in his last six games he averaged 20.6 fantasy points. Prorated to a full season, that would place him third among QBs. In that stretch he threw 15/3 TD/INT with 8.0 YPA, compared to 9/8 TD/INT with 7.3 YPA in his first nine games. The biggest difference was his red-zone TD rate, which jumped from an absurdly low 13.9 percent to an above-average 28.6. That likely will normalize around league average (23.5 percent) this year, but if his 71.5 percent on-target rate (23rd) doesn't improve or if he doesn't increase his 7.7 average target depth (15th), he's unlikely to be much more than a middling fantasy QB. And that's with good health, which can't be assumed for the 36-year-old, who adds nothing on the ground (65 rushing yards last year in 15 games). Stafford has a solid pair of wide receivers in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, and No. 3 wideout Demarcus Robinson came on late last season. Running back Kyren Williams gives the Rams a balanced offense, and Sean McVay's still calling plays, so Stafford at least still has plenty of fantasy value in two-QB leagues.

Expected to sit out Week 18
Stafford isn't expected to play Sunday against the Seahawks after head coach Sean McVay confirmed Monday that he plans on resting most of the Rams' key starters for the regular-season finale, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. "Typically, we've erred on the side of leaning a little bit more towards [resting players] and I would imagine as we continue to finalize our plans, that's probably the direction we'll go," McVay said, when pressed about the Rams' plans for Week 18.

Could have contract restructured
Dan Graziano of ESPN.com believes the Rams will restructure Stafford's contract to lower the quarterback's cap hit for 2025.
ANALYSIS
Stafford signed a four-year, $160 million contract with the Rams in August of 2022, and his current cap hit for 2025 is about $50 million. He adjusted his contract during the 2024 offseason, and Graziano believes that the Rams could soften the veteran quarterback's cap hit for 2025 by converting a portion of Stafford's salary into bonuses. The 37-year-old Stafford completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions across 16 regular-season games in 2024.
