THE BARCLAYS
Dustin Johnson's stats defined his win: Length, excellence in greens-in-regulation, bogey avoidance and outstanding putting.
His length paid off with 11 of his 21 birdies coming at par-4s plus an eagle at a par-4. When you're 311 yards down a fairway you will be using an iron usually used for scoring.
Also, Johnson averaged 15 greens-in-regulation (GIR) that gave him birdie reads that he jumped on for 21 birdies to just two bogeys and a double bogey in round one. His GIR stats are third best in 38 events this year.
His 21 birdies in 54 holes would project to 28 birdies in 72 holes. The only better mark this season came from Jhonatton Vegas at the Bob Hope Classic when he averaged 27.2 putts in five rounds.
Other: Preferred lies (lift, clean, place) were used in all three rounds fostering a flock of birdies. In the closing round, 65 of 72 players broke par-71.
It was good to see some players finishing well who hadn't done so recently:
Vijay Singh T-3, 16-under
Y.E. Yang and Camilo Villegas T-6, 14-under
Padraig Harrington T-13, 12-under.
This week, 100 players are in Boston area with a Friday start and a Labor Day finish.
DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP
The preview of seven strong finishers at last year's Deutsche Championship shows the possibility of more birdies, albeit with a few more bogeys.
In his fourth-round 62, winner Charley Hoffman had 11 birdies (six of which came on the back nine) with two bogeys. This built an aggregate five-stroke margin over second-placers Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald. Note the number of bogeys for all.
Hoffman's rankings in the five top-line stats, plus his out-birdieing the field and the closing 62 slammed the door.
This week you'll need players who are strong in total driving, GIR, par-5 performance, birdie average and bogey avoidance.
The top 70 in FedEx points will advance from the Deutsche Championship to play the BMW Championship in the Chicago area.
