DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP
The significant stats for Webb Simpson and Chez Reavie, shown above, are the Putts-per-Greens In Regulation (GIR) and Total putts per round.
Simpson clearly won the putting battle despite Reavie having more birdie looks with his better GIR performance. Simpson had two eagles and 17 birdies for a sum of 21 strokes. With six bogeys, he had a net of 15 strokes.
Reavie also had a net of 15, but one of Reavie's bogeys came at the 72nd hole while one of Simpson's birdies came there for a two-stroke swing.
In this case, it's not just what you do, it's when you do it.
If you were impressed with Simpson's 15-28 footers this year be aware that his putting this year is not as good as 2010 and 2009:
Strokes Gained:
2009 - 15th
2010 - 32nd

BMW CHAMPIONSHIP
Scoring at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club (par-71) won't see the galaxy of below-par rounds like last week at TPC Boston. If the course setup is like recent times, plenty of bogeys await.
In 2009, Tiger Woods won with 68-67-62-68-265 for 19-under; 62 a new course record. Jim Furyk and Marc Leishman tied for second at 11-under.
Start with checking the 2010 top six players' birdies and bogeys stats to get a bit of what to expect. You'll see how bogeys reduced chances for the win. Paul Casey is an excellent example. In the final round he was 5-under through 12. He then bogied the 13th, 14th and 15th, dooming his victory chances.
Of the six players shown, only Casey and Na are not in the BMW field.
Attributes for the BMW: With birdies scarce, bogey avoidance is a key stat - see grid again. GIR is key - five of the six players in 2010 were first, second, seventh, 12th, 17th and 37th. Sand saves will be important and, as always, a very good putting week is vital.
