This article is part of our DFS College Basketball series.
Today's college hoops slate has a common pool of five games, mostly consisting of intraconference matchups. DraftKings also has one particular exclusive game that you won't want to miss. Before jumping in, here are the implied totals for the DraftKings main slate:
Targets
1. Ayo Dosunmu, G, Illinois ($10,000 DK, $8,400 FD)
Dosunmu is the most expensive player on the board and it's not hard to see why. Illinois is projected to score around 78 points with Dosunmu playing the role of super star. He easily leads the team in minutes played and is taking 33 percent of his team's shots when on the court. The question for Dosunmu is can he provide any value given his cost? He's going against a Minnesota defense that ranks No. 42 in the country in terms of efficiency, which is actually average (if not below) compared to the rest of the Big Ten. All in all, I'm selecting Dosunmu because of his astronomically high ceiling. If Dosunmu is out of your price range then I'd strongly suggest Kofi Cockburn ($7,500 DK, $6,600 FD ) as he's the teams best rebounder and Minnesota has been vulnerable against offensive rebounds through the first six games of the season.
2. Herb Jones, G/F, Alabama ($7,600 DK , $6,700 FD)
Alabama is projected to score almost 80 points tonight so it's a good idea to key in on the Crimson Tide. I really like Jones in this spot because he leads the team in rebounding and Furman has been awful at guarding against offensive rebounds this season. Jones is also an active scorer as he's using 23 percent of his team's possessions when on the court. The other player I like in this matchup is Jaden Shackelford ($6,600 DK, $6,400 FD) as he has the second most rebounds on the team while also taking 25.7 percent of his team's shots when on the court, the highest rate on the team.
3. M.J. Walker, G, Florida State ($6,200 DK, $6,000 FD)
This target carries a little more risk due to the fact that Florida State usually plays a deep bench so minutes are more spread out. That being said, Walker plays the most minutes on the team while using 23.6 percent of his team's possessions when on the court. The senior guard is also the best shooter on the team (based on his long track record) so I think he's the safest bet for the Seminoles. Florida State is expected to score upwards of 75 points so Walker appears to offer solid upside given the matcup.
I should also note: Georgia Tech is another team that's vulnerable when it comes to allowing offensive rebounds. For this reason, I'm thinking Anthony Polite ($5,800 DK, $5,800 FD) or Balsa Koprivica ($6,000 DK, $5,700 FD) have a reasonable shot at providing excellent value.
DraftKings Exclusive - UCLA
The Bruins are projected to score the most points of any team in the DFS pool in what should be the biggest blowout of the day. UCLA's offensive efficiency is currently ranked No. 13 in the country and the Bruins are facing a Long Beach State team that is ranked No. 270 in terms of defensive efficiency. Starting point guard Tyger Campbell ($7,300) and forward Jaime Jaquez ($7,000) play the most minutes on the team while Chris Smith ($7,400) has the highest usage rate on the team.
Fades
1. Kansas State
The Wildcats are the worst team in the Big 12 and no other team is close. K-State is expected to score around 64 points today, and I'm almost surprised the number is that high. This is a team that barely scored 68 points at home against Fort Hays State only a week ago. In spite of the team's overall struggles, Mike McGuirl ($6,900 DK, $6,300 FD) is K-State's most involved player and could provide some value even if the team gets blown out.
2. Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets are projected to score around 66 points tonight, partly because they play at a slow tempo but mostly because of today's opponent. Florida State's defensive efficiency is currently ranked top-15 in the country per KenPom and as a team the Seminoles are ranked No. 12 overall. Given these notes, I'm looking elsewhere for DFS points although I will concede that Moses Wright ($9,300 DK, $8,200 FD) might still offer value as he's arguably the most productive Yellow Jacket and played well against Florida State in last year's matchup. Jose Alvarado ($7,500 DK, $7,200 FD), meanwhile, had a rough game in the same matchup from a year ago.
3. Clemson at Virginia Tech
Clemson's defense is currently ranked No. 2 in the country while playing at an incredibly slow pace. And speaking of teams that play at a slow pace, Virginia Tech's tempo is currently ranked as the 15th slowest of all D-1 schools. The Hokie's defense isn't quite as impressive as the Tigers, although it's no pushover as Virginia Tech's defensive efficiency is ranked at No. 47. Add all this up and it's easy to see why this game has the lowest over/under total on today's slate. I'm staying away.
