Who Are This Year's Most Experienced Big East MBB Teams?

A year after legendary head coach Rick Pitino led the St. John's Red Storm to the Queens-based university's first outright Big East regular-season title since 1984-85, it seems the two-time national championship-winning coach will have to start anew.

St, John's has the sixth-oldest roster in the 11-team conference this season, with an average age of 19.80 years. That ranks well behind the Big East's oldest team (Seton Hall, at 20.20 years) and well ahead of Marquette, which has the youngest average age across the Golden Eagles' 17-man roster, at 19.29 years.

This season's Red Storm roster is expected to be shepherded by North Carolina transfer Ian Jackson, who will likely man the point for Pitino and company this season after being named to the ACC All-Freshman Team last year.

Joining Jackson is 6-foot-5 guard Joson Sanon, who transferred in from Arizona State, where he averaged 11.9 points per game as a freshman last season. Graduate transfer Bryce Hopkins transfers in from Big East rival Providence, while frontcourt players such as Dillon Mitchell (formerly of Cincinnati and Texas) and Zuby Ejiofor (the most prominent returner from last season) round out the projected roster for Pitino's bunch this basketball season.

The other veteran-heavy Big East member to keep an eye on is the UConn Huskies, whose quest for an NCAA Tournament "three-peat" came up short in the second round last March. The story's much the same at Fanatics Sportsbook, where the Huskies are the preseason betting favorites to win the Big East title, at +120, while the Red Storm check in at +190 and Creighton enters at +650. The team at Caesars Sportsbook has UConn at +115, with St. John's at +190 and Creighton at +650.

When it comes to 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament championship futures betting, the Huskies are the top pick from the Big East on bet365, ranking fourth overall at +1500 (behind Purdue at +900, Houston at +1000 and Duke at +1200). The Red Storm have +1800 title odds, ranked alongside the BYU Cougars and Michigan Wolverines for seventh nationally.
