Wisely came up through the minors with the Rays before being traded to the Giants in November 2022. The 26-year-old is a career .214/.265/.319 hitter over parts of three major-league seasons, but he's slashed .275/.372/.433 at the Triple-A level and can play all over the diamond. Wisely is out of minor-league options and could compete for the Rays' opening at second base, though a reserve role is likelier.

Wisely always put up robust walk rates in the minors and stole more than 30 bases on two occasions on the farm. Unfortunately, he's shown no indication so far that either of those skills will translate at the big-league level, having posted just a 5.5 percent walk rate and gone 4-for-8 in stolen-base attempts in 142 contests. Wisely has graded out well defensively at both middle infield spots and is also capable of handling center field, which makes him useful even if never shows any progress with the bat or in the running game. All three of those positions are spoken for with the Giants, leaving Wisely with either a bench job or a return trip to Triple-A Sacramento.
