This article is part of our DFS Baseball 101 series.
Last June, I wrote an article about how to use team batting stats in daily fantasy baseball. Given the positive response, I will be doing monthly reports this year. This will be the final report for the season.Team batting with regard to daily fantasy baseball is important for a couple reasons. It allows you to identify a lower-priced starting pitcher who has an optimal matchup based on handedness rankings, and also lets you know what teams to avoid with that starting pitcher based on the same information.
For each team, I have a recap of each category rank for vs. RHP, vs. LHP, Home/Away and April/May/June/July.
Angels
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |

vs. LHP | 1 | 20 | 21 | 11 | 6 | 8 |
vs. RHP | 1 | 17 | 26 | 15 | 7 | 13 |
The Angels are the new Royals. They don't strike out much, but they don't really hit either. While their wRC+ ranking is pretty good, they have been a team that I have mostly just avoided all season.
Astros
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 30 | 7 | 6 | 12 | 12 | 11 |
MAY | 26 | 3 | 12 | 19 | 14 | 13 |

vs. RHP | 28 | 5 | 13 | 16 | 14 | 16 |
vs. LHP | 26 | 8 | 11 | 23 | 23 | 20 |
I have to think that the Astros have cost DFS players more money than any team this year. The lineup is full of big name hitters, but the rankings do not reflect it. They strike out a ton, so you can target them with an ace pitcher in tournaments.
A's
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 6 | 29 | 18 | 25 | 21 | 23 |
MAY | 5 | 29 | 23 | 22 | 22 | 24 |
JUNE | 2 | 21 | 20 | 16 | 13 | 13 |

vs. LHP | 2 | 30 | 16 | 22 | 21 | 19 |
vs. RHP | 4 | 26 | 22 | 27 | 21 | 23 |
The A's are much like the Angels in that they don't strike out often and don't do much damage across the board. But you definitely want to target A's right-handed batters against left-handed pitchers on the road. The trio of Marcus Semien, Danny Valencia and Khris Davis has done serious damage this year.
Blue Jays
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 26 | 6 | 11 | 14 | 13 | 13 |
MAY | 16 | 13 | 8 | 16 | 13 | 11 |

vs. RHP | 24 | 2 | 3 | 9 | 9 | 5 |
vs. LHP | 8 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 11 | 5 |
The Jays got off to a rough start this year and burned DFS owners in April and May, but once the batting order got settled, they have been on fire. They have been one of best hitting teams in baseball the last two months. You want to avoid starting pitching against them at all costs and look to stack them at home especially against left handed pitchers.
Braves
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 21 | 16 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 29 |

vs. RHP | 8 | 14 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 26 |
vs. LHP | 11 | 27 | 30 | 29 | 29 | 29 |
The Braves have been one of the worst offensive teams in baseball most of the year, but take note of their elevated rankings in July. They are starting to hit more, and are not the pushover they had been. The surge has been a result of Adonis Garcia and Freddie Freeman swinging a hot bat in July.
Brewers
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 29 | 2 | 17 | 22 | 24 | 20 |
MAY | 29 | 1 | 15 | 10 | 6 | 9 |

vs. LHP | 29 | 1 | 23 | 8 | 14 | 14 |
vs. RHP | 30 | 4 | 21 | 20 | 23 | 21 |
The Brewers have been a great target against in tournaments for starting pitchers because they strikeout so much, but you have to be careful because they draw walks, are tough at home and crush left-handers. The best strategy is to target right-handed pitchers against them on the road.
Cardinals
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 16 | 9 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 3 |

vs. RHP | 10 | 7 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 2 |
vs. LHP | 13 | 18 | 20 | 25 | 24 | 24 |
The Cardinals' offense has been red hot all year, especially against right-handed pitchers on the road. You can target them with left-handed pitchers at home, but I would only do so in tournaments.
Cubs
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 5 | 1 | 7 | 4 | 6 | 2 |

vs. LHP | 7 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
vs. RHP | 25 | 1 | 15 | 8 | 8 | 7 |
The Cubs are also another loaded offense and have been consistent all year. The one scenario where I think you can exploit them is with an ace right-handed pitcher at home. They have a high strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers, but proceed with caution.

The Dodgers got off to a slow start this year, but once Justin Turner, Yasmani Grandal and Adrian Gonzalez got back and 100 percent healthy they have been a top-5 hitting team. They are better to take on the road and against right-handed pitching.

Despite all of the injuries this season, the Giants still rank in the top 10 overall in our splits. Even though they play in an extreme pitchers' park, this lineup draws walks and doesn't strike out.

The Indians have some of the most extreme splits for home/away and right-handers/left-handers. While overall they have been a top-10 offense for the last three months, they are not good on the road or versus left-handed pitching.
Mariners
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |

vs. LHP | 15 | 21 | 9 | 21 | 13 | 16 |
The Mariners got off to a hot start this year and probably overachieved. They have slid back in recent months, but are still a great team to use against right-handed pitching. Their overall strikeout rate has jumped considerably in the last month where they came in as a bottom-5 team.

The Marlins have one of the biggest splits as a team for home and road. Because of the extreme pitchers' park in Miami, you can target against them at home, but stay away from them on the road.

The Mets have been one of the most inconsistent offenses in baseball. They were on fire in April and then went in the tank for May and June. Much of this was due to injuries, but they bounced back in July. They are heavily dependant on the long ball, making them a boom-or-bust team. I wouldn't use them as a stack, but I still think you can target against them especially with a top-tier left-handed starter.

The Nationals have been a consistent top-10 offense most of the year, especially on the road when they get away from Nationals Park. They are a dangerous team in that they don't strikeout much and draw a lot of walks. Also, they have a lot of power from both sides of the plate. One of the more popular teams to stack in tournaments because of the lineup depth, you can use them under most scenarios.

The Orioles have been on fire most of the season, but suddenly bottomed out in July. Chris Davis, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop all put up their worst month of the season. This was bound to happen as most teams with their hitting profile tend to go into prolonged slumps or hot streaks. You should still look at them for stacking when they face right-handed pitchers at home. In tournaments, you can look at targeting against them on the road with left-handed pitching.

The Padres have been one of the teams to target pitching with all year, but the last two months they have started to break out. You can still target them against right handed pitchers, but you want to stack them against left handers. They have one of the bigger RHP/LHP for any team in baseball. Phillies

The Pirates in April were completely a product of a weak schedule. Once they started playing better teams, they came back to the back. They are a middle-of-the-road offense now, especially with Andrew McCutchen having his worst season to date. Still, they do crush left-handers at home, so they would be a team to stack in that scenario. You can target right-handed pitchers away from PNC against them.

The best offense in baseball most of the season, you can stack the Red Sox against right-handed or left-handed pitching. This leads to expensive prices on just about every hitter in the lineup, so the optimal strategy is taking them in extremely high-total games or look at using the bottom half of the order to get some salary relief.

The Reds fall under the same category as the Phillies. They have been bad all year against all pitching, at home or on the road. The one saving grace is the strikeout rate did come down last month, but they are still a team that you should focus starting pitchers against.

The Rockies have the biggest split from home to road based on the Coors Field factor. Stacking them at home is pretty much the chalk, but you really can not play them on the road even if the salaries are adjusted.

The Royals started off a middle-of-the-pack offense, but injuries to key players like Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain sent them to the bottom 5 the last two months. You can target the Royals on the road against right-handed pitching, which is a common scenario.

The Tigers have traditionally been a top-5 offense and a favored stack among DFS players, but they have been middle of the pack most of the year. You can still use them especially at home against left-handed pitching.

Early in the season you could target pitching against the Twins. They were bottom 10 in the league in most categories, but starting toward the middle of June into July the lineup got revamped. Prospects were called up, injured players came back and they have done a great job of retooling with little resources. The best spot to use the Twins is on the road against left-handed pitchers.

The Yankees have been one of the toughest teams to strike out all year, so targeting them has not worked out well. Even though they rank low in most offensive categories, you still need to avoid them at home, especially right-handed pitching. The author(s) of this article may play in daily fantasy contests including – but not limited to – games that they have provided recommendations or advice on in this article.
