Closer Watch

Cubs - Manager Rick Renteria is averse to show his hand regarding the "open" closing gig, deeming it a committee at the commencement of the weekend. However, he may have revealed a leader on the clubhouse with his choice to shut down the imposing Cardinals on Friday and Saturday. During both outings, Renteria opted for Hector Rondon to preserve meager leads, which he accomplished in a combined 20 pitches to earn back-to-back saves. Overall, Rondon blanked St. Louis on two hits and no walks, while striking out one in two frames. On a sour note, he induced four flyballs versus two groundballs, but the development still leaves him with a healthy 1.91 GO:AO on the season. Alas, with another successful contest or two under his belt, Renteria could be prepared to name his main man for the ninth inning: Rondon.

Recommended Pickup

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C, MIA - Rarely enduring a swoon in his first month-plus as a Marlin, Saltalamacchia has been jumping on all pitching, tallying hits in eight of the last nine games. Along the way, he launched four long balls, six RBI, nine runs scored, and a 5:7 BB:K in 29 at-bats, which boosted his line on the season to a spectacular .303/.411/.573. He'll face one of his toughest tests of the year Monday in Mets southpaw Jon Niese, who has held the opposition to a .218 average and punched out 24, versus eight walks, in 32.2 innings. Luckily for Saltalamacchia, he's fared well against lefties in 2014, recording eight hits, including three doubles, to go with three RBI and four runs scored in 25 at-bats. Considering his price tag ($5,804) on DraftStreet.com, inserting him into daily lineups could yield fruitful results.
