2025 Fantasy Outlook
Alfred Delia introduced himself to the world in 2018 when he told an ESPN broadcast, "Back home, they call me Big Al, and I hit dingers." Mears could mimic Delia and say, "Back home, they call me Slick Nick. I throw hard and give up homers." Mears has now pitched in three different organizations since the 2020 season, because he has a big fastball and has struck out 33.6 percent of the batters he has faced in the minors. His major league strikeout rate is 24.6 percent, but a 14.3 K-BB percentage, a 1.53 WHIP, and a 1.2 HR/9 help explain why Mears has pitched in three organizations over the past three seasons. The stuff metrics love his upside, and his slider has a 50 percent whiff rate to it. However, for Mears to take a step up the leverage ladder in Milwaukee, he has to show more command within the zone. Milwaukee has a tremendous track record of getting more results from these types of projects, so things could get rolling for Mears quickly if something clicks this season. He is a classic, one-skill-away guy from finding some success in 2025 and should have a long leash with Milwaukee since he is out of options. Read Past Outlooks

Returns from IL
The Brewers reinstated Mears (illness) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Mears missed a significant amount of time during spring training due to an illness, and he began the season on the injured list in order to regain his strength. After throwing 3.2 scoreless innings during a rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville, the 28-year-old righty is now ready to rejoin the Brewers' bullpen. He'll replace Connor Thomas (elbow), who landed on the injured list Tuesday.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Mears made his big-league debut amidst a shortened 2020 season, making four relief appearances for the Pirates. He surrendered three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking seven across five innings of work. Prior to his debut, he hadn't pitched above Double-A, where he also saw limited action in 2019. Mears' elevated BB% was alarming in what turned out to be an extremely small sample size, but his strikeout stuff is up there with the best of them, featuring a solid fastball sitting around 96 mph and a curveball at 78 mph. It wouldn't be surprising to see Mears fall near the front end of Pittsburgh's bullpen in 2021 if he's able to crack the Opening Day roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Overcame pitch tipping
Mears said Sunday that he was informed just before the All-Star break that he was tipping pitches for most of the first half of the season, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has a 5.44 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 59:21 K:BB over 46.1 innings this season, but a 2.93 xERA and 2.53 FIP offer a more encouraging outlook. The latter numbers are likely what intrigued the Brewers, which acquired Mears from the Rockies over the weekend. Mears has eight appearances with multiple runs allowed this season, but it's unclear how big of a role the pitch tipping played in those performances.
