2025 Fantasy Outlook
Samuel's final year in San Francisco was a disaster, featuring career lows for receiving yards per game (44.7) and yards per carry (3.2) as he lost eight TDs and 311 yards from scrimmage compared to 2023, despite playing the same number of games (15). Per usual, he fought through injuries in a bunch of those games, with a mid-season bout of pneumonia being the only thing that limited his snap shares (and only for two weeks). While clearly still among the toughest and most physical players at his position, Samuel looked a half-step slower in 2024 and didn't break tackles as frequently as he had from 2021 to 2023. It's possible his physical playing style and history of nagging injuries have led to earlier-than-usual physical decline, but the Commanders apparently don't think so, having fully guaranteed Samuel's $17 million salary for the final year of his contract (after trading a fifth-round pick for him). It's an interesting fit both for real life and fantasy, putting the 29-year-old dual threat with an offensive coordinator (Kliff Kingsbury) who loves WR screens, and a quarterback (Jayden Daniels) whose running ability will discourage defenses from crashing down on Samuel when he's deployed as a rushing threat. Just don't expect many deep or intermediate targets, especially after Samuel had a tough time separating from cornerbacks last year. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Receiving score saves day
Samuel recorded four receptions on five targets for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 44-22 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders attempted only 22 passes, leaving no pass catcher with more than five targets. That limited the upside for any individual player, though Samuel was even more limited with only short-area targets. He now has fewer than 45 yards in four straight games, with only a four-yard touchdown catch midway through the third quarter saving his performance. Samuel's production is likely to remain volatile so long as Jayden Daniels (shoulder) is sidelined.

Samuel re-established himself as one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL in 2023, finding a middle ground between his monstrous breakout in 2021 (1,770 yards from scrimmage, 14 TDS) and a disappointing, injury-riddled 2022 (864 yards, five TDs). Rushing production (225 yards) and 12 total touchdowns allowed him to overcome a modest total of 89 targets, with Samuel being one of four 49ers in the range of 83-to-105 targets. He averaged 6.2 and 2.6 carries in his 14 full games, missing Weeks 7-8 with a shoulder injury and later playing only 20 snaps in a meaningless Week 18 contest. Samuel remained the most difficult wide receiver to tackle in the league, averaging 10.0 yards per target despite an aDOT of only 6.8 yards, thanks to his whopping 8.7 YAC average. Among wide receivers, only Rashee Rice gained a larger percentage of his yards after the catch -- a stat Samuel also ranked Top 5 in the previous two years. The downside, apart from facing considerable target competition from Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, is that Samuel's brute force means he takes far more hits per touch than a typical WR. He's missed 20.5 percent of regular-season games in his career, and that's a fair rate to expect going forward as he enters his age-28 season. Persistent trade rumors dating back to last year are the other major risk factor, though a move could actually help his fantasy value, depending on the team. The 49ers seem to be preparing for a future without either Samuel or Aiyuk, having spent a first-round pick on Ricky Pearsall and a fourth-rounder on Jacob Cowing.

Could play in Week 8
Samuel, who missed the Commanders' Week 7 loss to the Cowboys due to a heel injury, is on pace to practice ahead of Monday night's Week 8 clash against the Chiefs, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Samuel played through the injury in Week 6 against the Bears, but he was in too much discomfort to suit up versus Dallas. However, head coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday that Samuel, along with fellow sidelined receiver Terry McLaurin, was expected to put in a full week of practice during Week 8 prep, which begins Thursday.
