It's the final Wednesday of the MLB regular season. A lot of teams are playing for nothing. Others are setting themselves up for, or simply trying to reach, the playoffs. Through it all, we're trying to put our DFS lineups together. There are 13 games happening Wednesday night starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT or later. Let's get to the recommendations!
PITCHING
Alex Wood, SF vs. ARI ($7,500): Wood may have a 4.00 ERA, but due to strong offensive support he has a 10-4 record. Additionally, Wood does have a 3.55 FIP. The Diamondbacks are 25th in runs scored, and San Francisco is a tougher place for hitters than Arizona's ballpark is.
Nathan Eovaldi, BOS at BAL ($8,800): Speaking of ERA versus FIP, Eovaldi's FIP is a sparkling 2.83 compared to his 3.88 ERA. Facing Baltimore could help the pitcher get his ERA closer to that FIP. The Orioles are 26th in runs scored and truly have nothing to play for, save perhaps the No 1 pick in the MLB Draft.
Janson Junk, LAA at TEX ($5,500): I'm only recommending three pitchers Wednesday, because it's not a good day for pitching in my opinion. Junk has made three starts and has a 3.75 ERA. However, the Rangers rank 29th in runs scored and last in team OPS. If you want to save salary on pitching and splurge elsewhere, take a shot on Junk.
TOP TARGETS
Freddie Freeman, ATL vs. PHI ($4,000): Freeman is a career .295 hitter and he's going to have a slugging percentage over .500 for the sixth season in a row. Also, the lefty has an 1.022 OPS versus righties since 2019. Aaron Nola is scuffling down the stretch, as he has a 5.48 ERA over his last eight starts.
Pete Alonso, NYM vs. MIA ($3,800): The power in Alonso's bat is clear. After hitting 53 home runs as a rookie he has 35 this year with a .508 slugging percentage. Elieser Hernandez has allowed 2.31 home runs per nine innings this season. That's a big reason why he has a 5.58 FIP, and his career FIP is 5.13.
VALUE BATS
Mike Yastrzemski, SF vs. ARI ($3,300): Yaz's numbers have dipped this year, but he has an .892 OPS over the last 21 days. Additionally, he does have an .844 OPS versus righties. Merrill Kelly has a 4.59 ERA, and you might think that's because of home ballpark. In actuality, he has a 5.21 ERA at home since 2019.
Amed Rosario, CLE vs. KC ($3,000): Rosario has hit .283 and put up double-digit home runs and stolen bases. He's struggling with righties, but he has an .837 OPS versus lefties. Daniel Lynch is a left-handed pitcher, and he's had issues with righties. Specifically, he's allowed right-handed hitter to hit .301 against him.
STACKS TO CONSIDER
Red Sox vs. Zac Lowther: J.D. Martinez ($3,900), Xander Bogaerts ($3,700), Enrique Hernandez ($3,600)
Lowther has a 7.66 ERA, and that's with him getting a chance to face the Rangers' punchless offense in his last start. Before that, he had a 9.61 ERA. The Red Sox's offense is much better than the Rangers'. Since Lowther is a southpaw, I have three righty hitters here.
Martinez has 27 home runs, and since 2019 he's posted a 1.006 OPS versus lefties. Bogaerts has a .296 average, and he's trying to hit .300 for the third year in a row. He will likely have a slugging percentage over .500 for the fourth season in a row, though. Hernandez usually leads off for Boston, which means being in the position to score a lot of runs, especially in a matchup like this. Additionally, he has an .851 OPS versus lefties this year.
Athletics vs. Logan Gilbert: Matt Olson ($4,000), Mark Canha ($2,800), Josh Harrison ($2,300)
As a rookie, Gilbert has posted a 4.83 ERA. He's allowed 1.27 home runs per nine innings. Since the start of August, the right hander has a 5.79 ERA. It's been a campaign to forget, and it may not end well against the Athletics. I would have gone with Starling Marte in my stack recommendation, but he's been banged up with a lat strain. If he seems healthy, go for it.
The lefty Olson has 38 home runs and 109 RBI. His .274/.376/.546 slash line represent career highs in all categories. Canha doesn't hit for average, but he has a .359 OBP with 17 homers and 12 stolen bases. Harrison has led off for the A's quite a bit since joining the team, and he has a .282 average this season. I can see him getting on base and then getting driven in by Olson.
