2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Patriots made Maye the third overall pick in this year’s draft, hoping he’s the QB of the future that Mac Jones failed to be. Jones, the 15th overall pick in 2021, was traded in March to Jacksonville. Maye will compete for the starting job with free-agent acquisition Jacoby Brissett. Even if Maye isn’t the Week 1 starter, he likely will be under center at some point. At 6-4, 223, Maye has prototypical size, with a strong and talented arm that can both attack defenses deep and slip balls into tight windows. Scouts praised his vision and anticipation, and he’s an athletic dual threat who rushed for 1,147 yards and 16 TDs his last two years at North Carolina. Maye is a bit of a gunslinger, prone to ill-advised passes, and inconsistent mechanics and poor footwork at times hurt his accuracy, especially on routine short throws. But the Patriots have time to develop that while Brissett handles QB duty. The bigger issue is a lack of playmakers. The WR depth chart is topped by Kendrick Borne, who is coming off an ACL injury, and Demario Douglas, a 2023 sixth-round pick who failed to score last season. Second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk might already be the best wide receiver, and tight end Hunter Henry could be the No. 2 target. Maye, however, at least gives the Patriots hope in the post-Belichick era. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Makes pro debut in fourth quarter
Maye replaced Jacoby Brissett with 4:24 remaining in the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets on Thursday night and completed four of eight passes for 22 yards while adding two rushes for 12 yards.
ANALYSIS
Maye ended up helming a ragged 16-play, 46-yard drive that encompassed the final 4:24 of the game and culminated with the rookie third overall pick taking a sack at the Jets' 12-yard line. His longest completion came on the final pass he got off, a 15-yard connection with DeMario Douglas. Brissett threw for just 98 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per attempt while taking five sacks, so it remains to be seen if Maye, who was essentially just as ineffective over a more condensed period, will be considered for a daunting Week 4 road start against the 49ers on Sunday, Sept. 29. Per Mike Kadlick of CLNSMedia, that decision is one head coach Jerod Mayo stated in his postgame press conference will be further discussed with his staff.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expected to play this season
Maye is expected to start for the Patriots at some point in 2024, but it's not clear yet when his opportunity might come, Albert Breer of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots managed only three points in Thursday's loss to the Jets, and Jacoby Brissett has done little to move the ball effectively through three games, completing just 60.9 percent of his passes for one touchdown and 5.3 yards per attempt. The veteran QB hasn't committed a turnover, however, and the fact that Brissett has been sacked nine times highlights a big reason why the team may not want to throw its rookie quarterback into the fire quite yet. Maye, who was taken third overall in the 2024 Draft, will get his turn at some point, but not until the coaching staff feels both that he's ready for it, and that the team around him can give him enough support.
