FanDuel MLB: Sunday Breakdown

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Breakdown

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Sunday's MLB slate features all 30 teams and begins at 1:05 PM Eastern time. Read on to see which pitchers, key values/chalk and stacks to target.

Pitching Overview

Owners will likely be reluctant to pay top dollar for Max Scherzer ($11,500), who was originally scheduled to start Saturday but was pushed back to Sunday due to leg soreness. Jacob deGrom ($12,200) - who edged Scherzer out for the NL Cy Young last season - is coming off his worst start in more than a year, so the best value on the mound is found in the price tier just below.

Masahiro Tanaka ($9,500) is off to a fantastic start that includes a 15:2 K:BB and 1.47 ERA. He's primed to keep rolling against the White Sox at home, especially after Chicago mustered only one hit Saturday. Charlie Morton ($9,200) has a great opportunity to build on a strong start that's featured 21 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA through 16 innings when he takes on the feeble Toronto offense. Same for the Twins' Jose Berrios ($10,000) against Detroit's 29th-ranked offense. David Price ($8,900) has thrived against the Orioles with a career 15-5 record and 2.75 ERA, so he's a strong choice as well.

Key Values/Chalk

Nolan Arenado ($3,800) won't get to benefit from the Coors Field effect, but the Rockies third baseman is still a strong play in San Francisco against lefty Derek Holland as Arenado enjoyed a .488 wOBA against left-handed pitching last season. Boston's Mookie Betts ($4,700) also coincidentally posted a .488 wOBA in that split, and he'll face a southpaw at hitter-friendly Fenway Park with Baltimore sending rookie John Means to the mound.

Justin Bour ($2,600) is a nice budget pick for the Mike Trout-less Angels at Wrigley Field against Tyler Chatwood, who's moving into the rotation to replace the injured Jon Lester after posting a 6.00 ERA in a long-relief role.

Guys to target at lighter-hitting positions include Diamondbacks second baseman Wilmer Flores ($2,300) against visiting Padres lefty Eric Lauer and Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus ($3,600) against A's southpaw Brett Anderson. Andrus managed a .378 home wOBA when facing lefties last season and is doing even better against them in 2019.

Stacks

Despite Marlins Park's pitcher-friendly conditions, Phillies sluggers such as Bryce Harper ($4,600) and Rhys Hoskins ($4,800) are likely to be popular picks against notoriously slow-starting righty Jose Urena, who has never recorded a career March/April win and is 0-3 with a 9.22 ERA in 2019.

The Athletics benefit from both location and matchup, as they're facing Shelby Miller at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Miller has struggled to a 9.53 ERA and 9.69 xFIP through two starts after posting a 10.69 ERA in 16 innings last season, and the Texas-based venue had a league-high 1.35 park factor in 2018. You'll be hard-pressed to find a player in this slate more likely to hit one out of the park than Oakland's Khris Davis ($4,800).

The Cardinals-Reds game from Monterrey, Mexico is likely to feature some offensive fireworks from both sides, as both starting pitchers come in with ERAs north of 6.00. Usual suspects like Paul Goldschmidt ($3,800), Matt Carpenter ($3,100) and Joey Votto ($3,600) should offer nice value at their middling prices.
