2024 Fantasy Outlook

A 2024 sixth-round pick, Vidal joins a Chargers backfield with minimal experience beyond ex-Ravens Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. The rookie out of Troy has traits that should appeal to new Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, as Vidal was tough to bring down in college and took 297 carries for 1,661 yards and 14 TDs last season alone. He's not especially elusive, but he showed potential in the passing game with at least 18 receptions in each of his four seasons at Troy, and he earned praise from both coaches and scouts for his pass blocking. Vidal's combination of bulk (5-8, 213) and speed (4.46 40) makes him far more interesting for fantasy than a typical sixth-round pick, especially within the context of a Chargers offense that's looking to run the ball more often despite having a shaky group of veteran RBs. Vidal carried the ball five times for 24 yards in the 34-27 win over the Broncos on Thursday.

ANALYSIS
It was Gus Edwards' time to shine Thursday, as the bruising back helped the team complete a feverish second-half rally, finishing with 14 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns. This very much felt like the Chargers acknowledging Edwards was the hot hand Thursday, as game script wouldn't necessarily suggest the power back being a focal point. As such, Vidal was simply an afterthought. The rookie did rip off a 19-yard run, his longest of the season, but otherwise was just used sparingly. Given the wide degree of variance week to week from this platoon backfield, it's hard to assume Vidal will be a fantasy factor Week 17 against the Patriots.

Vidal has been a healthy scratch in each of the Chargers' last three games, but Dobbins' injury opens the door for the rookie out of Troy to enter the backfield rotation with Edwards and Haskins. Vidal has appeared in four regular-season games, turning 18 carries into 44 yards and three receptions on as many targets for 49 yards, including a 38-yard catch for a touchdown. With Dobbins sidelined for at least the next four games, Vidal has an opportunity to earn a larger role in the Chargers' backfield.
