Kimani Vidal

22-Year-Old Running BackRB
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 2024 sixth-round pick, Vidal joins a Chargers backfield with minimal experience beyond ex-Ravens Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. The rookie out of Troy has traits that should appeal to Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, as Vidal was tough to bring down in college and piled up 297 carries for 1,661 yards and 14 TDs last season alone. He's not especially elusive, however, and while he caught at least 18 passes in each of his four college seasons, he's not exactly a natural as a pass catcher or blocker. Those potential shortcomings might matter less under Roman compared to other coordinators, as his offenses in Baltimore ran the ball a ton and rarely sent passes to running backs. Vidal's combination of bulk (5-8, 213) and speed (4.46 40) makes him far more interesting for fantasy than a typical sixth-round pick, especially in the context of a Chargers offense that's looking to run the ball more often but has a shaky group of RBs. The Chargers selected Vidal in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 181st overall.
ANALYSIS
After a slew of RBs were drafted in the fourth and fifth rounds, Vidal was one of the few remaining backs capable of carving out a sizable role in a NFL offense. He couldn't have landed in a better situation than Los Angeles, where 29-year-old Gus Edwards and oft-injured J.K. Dobbins (knee) top the depth chart. Vidal was a workhorse for Troy over the past three seasons, with his 3,494 rushing yards including a Sun Belt-leading 1,661 last year. At 5-foot-8, 213 pounds, Vidal has a stout frame and impressive balance, and his 4.46 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine was a strong showing for a densely built RB. He may start off competing for a depth role with Isaiah Spiller, a disappointing 2022 fourth-round pick who has only 64 career touches for 184 yards.

Injuries undid J.K. Dobbins in Baltimore, but he remains one of the NFL's most talented running backs and an overlooked presence with the Chargers.
