Pitching Overview
Max Scherzer ($11,900) is likely to headline plenty of lineups despite his hefty price tag. He lost to the Mets on Opening Day despite striking out 12, but gets a nice opportunity to exact his revenge at pitcher-friendly Citi Field and its league-low park factor of .731 from last season. Chris Archer ($8,900) and his career 25.9 percent strikeout rate should also get plenty of love against the 1-7 Reds.
Mike Clevinger ($10,800) against the Blue Jays and Zach Eflin ($8,400) against the Twins will both be at home and looking to build on their respective outstanding season debuts. The former threw seven innings of one-hit, 12-strikeout ball, while the latter struck out nine in five scoreless frames.
If you're looking for a cheap option on the mound, Mike Fiers ($7,500) is probably your best bet. He's tossed six scoreless innings in each of his past two starts, and Minute Maid Park's pitcher-friendly bent could take a bit of the bite out of Houston's talented lineup.
Key Values/Chalk
Coors Field's hitter-friendly conditions often lead to fantasy-friendly hitting performances, and this could be such a game for both sides with Julio Urias opposing Chad Bettis on the mound. Left-handed Dodgers hitters like Cody Bellinger ($5,100) and right-handed Rockies such as Nolan Arenado ($4,300) stand out as options to target. Arenado fashioned an otherworldly .555 wOBA in 102 plate appearances against lefties at home last season.
Adam Frazier ($3,700) continues to offer nice value at the top of Pittsburgh's lineup, and the left-handed hitting second baseman will face Anthony DeSclafani, who surrendered a .385 wOBA to batters from that side in 2018.
Adam Wainwright isn't the Wainwright of old and the Padres will likely need to score a lot to keep pace (more on that below). Massive offseason acquisition Manny Machado ($4,300) is a chalk play against Wainwright given the third baseman's nearly identical lefty/righty splits, while shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. ($3,300) qualifies as a more affordable option with upside. Tatis has displayed intriguing power for a shortstop, as the 20-year-old has already launched a pair of home runs on the young season.
Stacks
Right-handed hitters on the Cardinals are primed to feast against Padres lefty Matt Strahm. Strahm averaged 93.4 mph on the fastball out of the bullpen last season, but threw it at just 90.9 mph in his first start en route to allowing five runs over 2.2 innings. Players like Paul Goldschmidt ($5,000, .405 wOBA vs. lefties in 2018), Yadier Molina ($2,200, .345) and Marcell Ozuna ($3,000, .382) should all get serious consideration at their respective valuations.
Another subpar southpaw to stack against is Seattle's Wade LeBlanc. Among White Sox primed to capitalize on this favorable matchup are Jose Abreu ($4,000) and Yoan Moncada ($4,300) - who finally seems to be breaking out at age 23.
Merrill Kelly is holding onto the fifth starter role for Arizona after spending the past four seasons pitching in South Korea. But it's been a long time since he faced a lineup as potent as Boston's, so the usual suspects in the Red Sox lineup all have plenty of upside here.
