Sunday was a weird day weather wise around the United States. Some places were really hot, some were unusually cold, and rain was an issue. Two games even got postponed, and we will likely never see the Pirates and Marlins make their game up. Monday has 12 games, and the weather looks fine… except in New York, and possibly Philadelphia. Here are my recommendations.
PITCHER
Trevor Williams, PIT at STL ($8,400): Williams didn't get to start Sunday, which means the Cardinals have to face the red-hot hurler now. The 26-year-old has a 0.66 ERA in his last nine starts, and don't be worried about him on the road. He actually has a better road ERA than home ERA. The Cardinals have a pretty good offense, but not enough to overshadow Williams' recent stretch of play.
GPP Pitcher Fade: Zack Godley, ARI at COL($8,300): Godley will be making his first start since going on paternity leave, and this is a rough spot for him to step into. He has a 5.05 ERA on the road, and now he has to pitch at Coors Field. The Rockies are sixth in runs scored at home, thanks in part to how much their ballpark helps offense.
Cheap GPP Consideration: Lucas Giolito, CWS at KC ($8,000): Giolito's overall numbers aren't great, but he has a 4.31 ERA over his last 11 starts, including a 2.97 ERA on the road. In fact, a lot of the 24-year-old's issues can be ascribed to his 7.52 home ERA. The Royals are 29th in runs scored, which should bode well for Giolito.
CATCHER/FIRST BASE
Ryan O'Hearn, KC vs. CWS ($3,300): Hey, just because Giolito might be worth a consideration doesn't mean he's going to pitch a perfect game. He's a right-handed pitcher, and he's all you need to know about O'Hearn: He has a 1.293 OPS against righties. He also has a 1.041 OPS at home. This game is right up his alley.
SECOND BASE
DJ LeMahieu, COL vs. ARI ($3,500): LeMahieu has been hot, he has six homers in his last 30 games, and on the season he now has a .278/.326/.446 slash line. He's not stealing bases like he used to (six in 107 games) but his 14 homers are a new personal best. As previously noted, Godley has a 5.05 road ERA this season.
THIRD BASE
Miguel Andujar, NYY at MIN ($3,900): It's easy to overlook the third baseman with all the talent around him, including potential Rookie of the Year Gleyber Torres, but Andujar's slashed .299/.333/.523 in his own right. The 23-year-old has hit 23 home runs, and he has no real platoon splits. Kyle Gibson has routinely been worse at home, and that's true this year as well. He also has a 4.15 FIP.
SHORTSTOP
Andrelton Simmons, LAA vs. TEX ($3,300) Simmons got a rare day off Sunday, but not because of his play. He has a .342 OBP and has hit 11 homers while stealing nine bases. Mike Minor has a 5.79 ERA on the road, and he's allowed 1.48 homers per nine innings as well.
OUTFIELD
Brandon Nimmo, NYM vs. MIA ($3,800): Nimmo has been as hot as any hitter in baseball over the last month. Across his last 30 games he's managed a 1.214 OPS. Jeff Brigham has made one start in his MLB career, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings. There's no reason to think Nimmo won't stay hot.
Lorenzo Cain, MIL at CHC ($3,700): Cain has a 1.049 OPS against lefties this season, and it's the second time in three seasons he's had a 1.000 OPS versus LHP. He also has speed, as he's stolen 26 bases. Southpaw Jon Lester has a 4.67 FIP this year, his second season in a row with a FIP higher than 4.00.
Starling Marte, PIT at STL ($3,600): Marte has 31 stolen bases, and he's swiped at least 30 bags in each of the five full seasons he's played. He also has 18 homers, close to tying his personal best of 19. Adam Wainwright will be making his first start since May 13 after a stint on the 60-day disabled list due to an elbow injury. He's only pitched in four games this year, but last season he had a 5.11 ERA.
