Yahoo DFS Hockey: Sunday Picks

Yahoo DFS Hockey: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

There are six games in the NHL on Sunday, but only the five evening bouts beginning at 5 p.m. ET are included in the main contests at Yahoo. Carolina, Colorado and Toronto are all huge favorites, while New Jersey and Columbus are both short underdogs on home ice. It's also worth noting the Stars, Blue Jackets, Islanders, Devils, and Maple Leafs are all playing for the second consecutive day.

GOALIE

Philipp Grubauer, COL vs. LA ($34): This salary probably isn't prohibitive enough considering Grubauer's numbers and the shallow goalie pool Sunday. The 29-year-old netminder sports an impressive .920 save percentage, 1.95 GAA and four shutouts. Additionally, the Avs boast the best Corsi For percentage in the league and a third-ranked 86.5 penalty-kill percentage.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Jack Campbell, TOR at OTT ($36): To start, Campbell's status is up in the air as he didn't even suit up in a backup role Saturday. Also, the Maple Leafs are in a prime letdown spot travelling to Ottawa for the second leg of a back-to-back set - even if it's only a short flight. The Senators have also already topped Toronto twice this season, and Campbell comes in as one of the most expensive options in the goalie pool.

CENTER

Mathew Barzal, NYI at NJD ($23): The Devils have lost eight of their past nine games and allowed a healthy 35 goals during the skid while also dealing with the league's worst penalty-kill percentage. Barzal was on the ice for 24 shot attempts and three high-danger scoring chances during Saturday's 3-2 win over New Jersey and collected an assist. Look for another solid showing from the No. 1 center Sunday.

CENTER TO AVOID

Joe Pavelski, DAL at CLS ($27): It's been a throwback season for Pavelski, but statistical correction looms and this salary is steep. The 36-year-old currently maintains a career-high 23.2 shooting percentage and was limited to just a single shot attempt in Saturday's loss to the Blue Jackets. Just note Columbus has allowed 17 goals through its past four games, so the matchup shouldn't be considered daunting.

WING

Martin Necas, CAR at DET ($19): Projected to skate atop the depth chart with Sebastian Aho ($28) and Nino Niederreiter ($18) at five-on-five, Necas receives a decent value boost in the elevated role. Not only is the 22-year-old Czech in the midst of a breakout campaign, he's collected three tallies and five helpers through his past six games and the Red Wings are a doormat opponent having posted the third most goals against per game and the third worst penalty-kill percentage.

Jason Robertson, DAL at CLS ($17): As noted, the Blue Jackets aren't an intimidating opponent and Robertson has quietly been one of the most efficient scorers in the league with a fourth-ranked 3.72 points per 60 minutes at five-on-five among NHL regulars. Expect him to also be an unpopular target.

WINGS TO AVOID

Andrei Svechnikov, CAR at DET ($27): With just two goals and a 4.3 shooting percentage through his past 18 games, there's definite positive regression ahead for Svechnikov. However, it would be nice to see his salary reflect the goal drought. Instead, the third-year Russian carries the third-highest salary among wingers.

DEFENSE

Samuel Girard, COL vs. LA ($19): No. 1 defenseman Cale Makar ($25) is working his way back from an upper-body injury, but Girard remains a high-end option while the star D-man is out of action. And Girard's salary hasn't climbed high enough considering he's posted a point-per-game pace through the past eight games.

Zach Werenski, CLS vs. DAL ($17): It's been a tough season for the 24-year-old defenseman, but Werenski has turned the corner of late with a goal, five assists and 16 shots through his past six outings. With his salary still lagging behind his uptick in production, he's in value territory. Dallas is also struggling along a 4-9-6 stretch.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Drew Doughty, LA at COL ($19): As noted, the Kings are facing a tough matchup. So even with Doughty's point-per-game pace through his past seven outings, it's probably best to look elsewhere today. After all, the veteran carries a plus-minus risk and has missed the scoresheet in five of his past 10 appearances.

Thomas Chabot, OTT vs. TOR ($17): Even with this being a possible problem matchup for the Maple Leafs, Chabot's plus-minus risk can't be ignored. He's posted a minus-7 rating through the past 10 games and sports a dash-12 mark for the campaign. Toronto has also scored the most goals per game in the league while Ottawa has allowed the most.
