DraftKings NHL: Sunday Picks

DraftKings NHL: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

SLATE PREVIEW

It's Super Bowl Sunday. Fortunately, we have plenty of hockey to keep us occupied until kickoff. The first puck drops at 12 p.m. EST in a matchup between the Capitals and the Flyers. Both teams are looking to snap two-game win streaks.

We'll focus on the four games starting at 3 p.m. EST. Five of the eight teams playing rank in the bottom 10 in terms of xGF/60, meaning offense might be hard to find in this slate. However, the Hurricanes, Golden Knights and Panthers should provide plenty of support for DFS players, among a few other value plays to bolster your lineup.

GOALIES

Robin Lehner, VGK vs. LAK ($8,200): It's Lehner's turn in net, and he needs a big performance after consecutive losses in which he totaled an .840 save percentage. The 29-year-old is set up well Sunday, as the Kings are in town for a second straight meeting after posting a mediocre 2.8 goals per game this season, 18th in the league.

Chris Driedger, FLA vs. DET ($8,200): Can the Panthers afford to put Driedger back on the bench in favor of the $10 million Sergei Bobrovsky? Perhaps they can against the Red Wings, who rank last in the league with 1.68 xGF/60 and 29th with a 10.0 power-play percentage, but Driedger has been white-hot. Through his first four starts, he's posted a .942 save percentage and a 3-0-1 record. Make sure to check goalie confirmations.

James Reimer, CAR at CLM ($7,800): Before getting lit up by the Blackhawks on Thursday, Reimer was 4-0-0 with a .915 save percentage. He's taking over as the starter and draws a favorable matchup against the Blue Jackets, who rank 29th in the league with just 1.75 xGF/60.

VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS

Vincent Trocheck, CAR at CLM ($6,200): Trocheck centers the second line, and it doesn't look like he's going anywhere. He's totaled seven points — three on the power play — and 29 shots on net through eight games. His shot volume keeps his fantasy value afloat no matter the circumstances, and the matchup against the Blue Jackets' defense without Zach Werenski (lower body) is even more appealing.

Roope Hintz, DAL vs. CHI ($6,000): Hintz's breakout is underway. He has the speed to drive the offense, and he's now registered seven points — all on the power play — through the first six games. The Blackhawks' PK (80.7 percent) ranks 14th in the league, opening the door for Hintz to keep it rolling.

Alex Tuch, VGK vs. LA ($4,000): Tuch is heating up with five points in as many games, firing nine shots on net. Only one of those points came with the man advantage, so the 2014 first-round pick should be somewhat immune from Los Angeles' menacing penalty kill.

Jack Roslovic, CLM vs. CAR ($3,500): Roslovic is fitting in with the Blue Jackets, collecting four points in the last three games. He centers the first line next to Patrik Laine — his old teammate in Winnipeg and a consistent 30-goal scorer. Reimer has been solid, but the Hurricanes' defense is suspect enough to provide plenty of upside for Roslovic.

LINE STACKS

Panthers vs. Red Wings

Aleksander Barkov (C - $7,600), Anthony Duclair (W - $5,000), Carter Verhaeghe (W - $5,400)

This line has averaged 3.48 xGF/60 at even strength, and each player gets power-play time as well. Barkov has been fantastic this season with 11 points and 33 shots on net, and Verhaeghe is scoring like crazy, tallying six goals. Duclair has yet to light the lamp, but he's knocking on the door with 2.6 shots per game after scoring on 12.5 percent of his shots last season.

Hurricanes at Blue Jackets

Sebastian Aho (C - $6,800), Andrei Svechnikov (W - $6,800), Brock McGinn (W - $3,200)

The Hurricanes' top line has been overperforming, but a bit of regression likely won't be noticeable, as it's recorded 4.35 xGF/60. Keep an eye out for line changes, but Aho and Svechnikov should stay together at even strength and the power play. Their matchup is pristine, too, as Columbus has a 3.0 GAA this year and a 78.6 penalty-kill percentage (20th in the league).

Golden Knights vs. Kings

William Karlsson (C - $5,400), Jonathan Marchessault (W - $5,500), Reilly Smith (W - $4,200)

This line has accounted for seven goals and nine helpers through the first eight games, and only one of those points came on the power play. The Kings' PK (86.5 percent) ranks third in the league, so this unit has an advantage due to its even-strength successes. And it doesn't hurt that the Kings rank 25th in the league with a 3.4 GAA.

DEFENSEMEN

Dougie Hamilton, CAR at CLM ($7,000): After six straight seasons with double-digit goals, Hamilton has yet to score a goal despite 21 shots on net. The Blue Jackets PK is struggling, and Hamilton has converted on the power play with assists, so he's positioned well.

Aaron Ekblad, FLA vs. DET ($6,000): The spotlight has been on Keith Yandle, but Ekblad has been fantastic this year, especially on the power play where he has four of his six points. The Red Wings' penalty kill is ranked 29th in the league, making Ekblad a top-tier play Saturday.

Alec Martinez, VGK vs. LAK ($5,600): Martinez rang up five assists through the first eight games and ranks 12th in the league among defensemen with 3.26 xGF/60 at even strength. He provides a superb floor with 29 blocked shots as well, hitting the bonus in five of the games.

Filip Hronek, DET at FLA ($4,800): Hronek continues to skate on the top pairing and handles significant power-play minutes. The 23-year-old blueliner has six points — three on the power play — through 12 games, and he has an opportunity to exploit the Panthers' brutal PK (76.9 percent).

Seth Jones, CLM vs. CAR ($4,700): Jones got off to a bit of a slow start, but look for his opportunities to increase. Zach Werenski's absence should push Jones to the top power-play unit, and his floor will be 25 minutes per game. Carolina has been decent defensively this season, but their PK is nothing special, checking out at 80.0 percent, 17th in the league.
