The Saints cut Callaway on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The move is to make room on the Saints' 90-man training camp roster for wide receiver Shaquan Davis. After being let go by Pittsburgh in late July, Callaway returned to New Orleans on Aug. 1 after spending most of the 2023 season on the Saints' practice squad. He played 16 snaps (15 on offense, one on special teams) in Saturday's 16-14 preseason win over the Cardinals, but he was unable to convert on his lone target from quarterback Spencer Rattler late in the fourth quarter. Callaway now will look to earn a spot on another team that is in need of depth at wide receiver.

Callaway signed a one-year deal with the Broncos this offseason after playing his first three seasons in New Orleans. The 25-year-old had an underwhelming 2022 campaign, posting just 16 grabs for 158 yards and one touchdown in 14 games with the Saints. In joining Denver, Callaway is reunited with his former head coach Sean Payton, which could yield a boost to his production. The 6-2, 204-pounder produced career-best marks (46-698-6 receiving line) when the two worked together in 2021. Even so, Callaway may face an uphill battle to meaningful playing time with Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and rookie Marvin Mims also currently in the wideout mix.
Callaway finished the 2021 season with 46 catches for 698 yards and six touchdowns, all career highs for the 24-year-old wideout. The 6-2, 204-pounder enters the 2022 campaign facing an uphill battle for targets as the No. 4 option in the wide receiver pecking order, at best, behind Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry and Chris Olave. However, if Callaway can carry some big-play momentum over from last year, he could earn himself a role as a deep threat in the Saints offense.
An eight-catch, 75-yard performance Week 7 put Callaway on the map in fantasy circles in 2020. However, that outing turned out to be an outlier for the undrafted rookie, and Callaway ultimately finished his inaugural season with 21 catches on 27 targets for 213 yards and no scores. Moreover, his mark of 10.1 yards per catch isn't favorable for a player who is considered to be a one-trick pony as a deep threat. However, not only will the offseason departure of Emmanuel Sanders open snaps for Callaway, but New Orleans made almost no significant offseason additions at wide receiver and Michael Thomas is expected to miss at least the first month of the upcoming season as he recovers from ankle surgery. The Tennessee product has a chance to open the season in the starting lineup, and he could even stay there once Thomas gets back, depending on how he performs relative to Tre'Quan Smith and Deonte Harris.

WRNew Orleans Saints
March 12, 2023
Callaway is expected to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins March 15, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
While a return to the Saints hasn't been ruled out, Callaway will get a chance to test the market, as New Orleans isn't expected to tender Callaway. The wide receiver will thus shift from being a restricted free agent to an unrestricted one.
