EARLY SUNDAY

Cleveland (+10.5) at Baltimore, o/u 45.0 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

It would be really easy to blame rookie kicker Andre Szmyt for the Browns' failure to pull off a Week 1 upset over the Bengals – after all, he left four points on the table in a one-point loss, with his FG miss coming from 36 yards out. That was hardly Cleveland's only issue, though. The first of Joe Flacco's two interceptions led to a Cincy FG, while the second came around midfield in the final minute of the fourth quarter, and prevented Szmyt from getting a shot at redemption. Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson also combined for 2.1 yards per carry against a run defense that was mediocre at best last year, which perhaps explains why the team is trying to fast-track Quinshon Judkins' debut even though there's still a chance he's going to face a league suspension. Flacco did do a good job of spreading the ball around, as five different pass-catchers saw at least six targets, and given how often the team is likely to be playing from behind this year, the Browns' passing game could be a more fruitful source of fantasy value that expected in 2025. At least until Flacco gets benched in favor of one of the kid QBs, anyway.

It's been four days since it happened as I write this, and I'm still not sure how the Ravens lost that game to the Bills. Yeah, sure,

It's been four days since it happened as I write this, and I'm still not sure how the Ravens lost that game to the Bills. Yeah, sure, Josh Allen is capable of scoring any time he gets the ball, but that was the thing – there was no reason to think he would even get the ball often enough to engineer a comeback the way Derrick Henry was steamrolling the Buffalo defense heading into the fourth quarter Sunday night. To put it another way, Baltimore is likely to be in some kind of mood heading into Week 2, and they're facing the perfect opponent to take their frustrations out on. The Browns have kept this rivalry close at times in recent years, but when the Ravens win, they tend to win big – three of their last four victories in the series have been by at least 25 points, including a 35-10 win in Week 19 last year at M&T Bank Stadium. Win or lose, Lamar Jackson had produced big numbers the last couple seasons against the Browns, producing nine TDs (seven passing two rushing) against only two INTs over the last four games. The Baltimore defense should also have a bit easier time containing a 40-year-old statue in the pocket than they did Allen.

CLE injury report: QB Deshaun Watson (PUP, Achilles), RB Quinshon Judkins (out, exempt list), RT Jack Conklin (questionable, eye), LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (PUP, neck)
BAL injury report: TE Isaiah Likely (out, foot)

Slight lean: WR Jerry Jeudy (BAL 29th in DVOA vs. WR1 in 2024)
Strong lean: WR Zay Flowers (CLE 31st in DVOA vs. WR1 in 2024)

Strong fade: RB Jerome Ford (BAL fourth in rushing DVOA, first in rushing yards allowed to RBs, first in YPC allowed in 2024)
Slight fade: TE Mark Andrews (CLE sixth in DVOA vs. TE in 2024)

NFL weather report: 1-10 percent chance of rain

Head-to-head record, last five years: 6-4 BAL, average score 27-19 BAL, average margin of victory 12 points. The teams have split the last four season series.

The Scoop: Sampson leads the CLE backfield with 40 scrimmage yards. Flacco throws for under 200 yards, gets picked off twice and sacked four times, with Kyle Van Noy scoring a fumble return score after one of the latter, but the QB does find Jeudy for a TD. Henry thunders for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson throws for 230 yards and runs for 60, tossing scores to Flowers and DeAndre Hopkins. Ravens 41-7

Jacksonville (+3.5) at Cincinnati, o/u 49.5 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

The Jags had little trouble putting away the Panthers in their opener, piling up 17 points in the second quarter and then mostly chilling in the second half after a lightning delay disrupted everyone's mojo. I'm not sure I've ever seen an "unsettled" backfield situation settled so quickly – Travis Etienne performed so well during his first game in Lian Coen's offense, Jacksonville up and traded Tank Bigsby to Philly the very next day. Keep in mind when making the obligatory Bucky Irving comparisons here that Irving didn't really lock down the Bucs' top job last year until after the team's Week 11 bye – the rookie saw double-digit carries only twice in Tampa's first nine games, and he didn't top 16 touches until Week 12. Etienne saw 16 carries and 19 touches right from the jump in 2025. If you double Irving's second-half production from last year, you get over 1,400 rushing yards and 10 TDs, plus over 400 receiving yards. Just sayin'. Trevor Lawrence, on the other hand, didn't look much like Baker Mayfield in Coen's scheme, but he didn't need to in Week 1. His connection with Brian Thomas was particularly poor, and that will need to change quickly if the Jaguars are going to be any kind of serious threat. First-year DC Anthony Campanile's unit hasn't really been tested yet, but three takeaways against Bryce Young is a solid start, at least.

Congrats to Zac Taylor on his second career Week 1 win! The first came in overtime against the Vikings in 2021, and this year's victory was a 17-16 gift from the Browns' rookie kicker, who pooched an extra point in the third quarter and a potential game-winning FG with just over two minutes left in the fourth. The Bengals and slow starts go together like peanut butter and mouse traps, so I'm not sure why everyone with Joe Burrow and/or Ja'Marr Chase shares is freaking out about this one. Burrow hasn't reached 200 passing yards in three straight openers, and his TD this year was his first in Week 1 since 2022 (when he also threw four INTs.) Chase had a 10-97-0 line on 11 targets through two games last year, and a 10-70-0 line (on 17 targets!) through two weeks in 2023. Deep breaths, folks. It's a long season. Chase Brown also didn't have a gain longer than eight yards, but he at least found the end zone. It's too early to get a read on the defense under new coordinator Al Golden, but two sacks and two picks against Joe Flacco is a decent place to build from.

New York Giants (+6) at Dallas, o/u 44.5 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

I try to be wary of confirmation bias, but when a team I thought would be bad, with a head coach I would describe as "overrated" at best and a starting quarterback who's seen better days, comes out in Week 1 and looks like the worst team in the NFC, it's hard not to immediately write them off as favorites for the first overall pick in next year's draft. The Giants certainly have some interesting pieces on the roster – Malik Nabers of course, and their dangerous front seven – but not enough of them, and the evidence strongly suggests Brian Daboll is a big headwind to any kind of turnaround. Daboll left Buffalo after the 2021 season, and Josh Allen hasn't seemed to miss him at all. Meanwhile, Daniel Jones looked better in his first game with Shane Steichen as his coach than he did in three seasons under Daboll. Maybe Russell Wilson and the defense can keep the Giants afloat, but it already feels like 'staying afloat' is the ceiling here.

The Cowboys managed to keep things close against the defending Super Bowl champs and had chances to win it late in Week 1, if you're into that whole moral victory thing, and they get extra rest coming into a clash with a divisional opponent they have consistently wrecked in recent years, so the outcome probably shouldn't be in doubt. Brian Schottenheimer's crew didn't exactly look good, though. Dak Prescott and the offense had trouble taking advantage of a defense that lost its best player before the first snap, and the Micah Parsons-less defense looked like they were giving Jalen Hurts a full five Mississippis before starting their pass rush. The presence of George Pickens and Jake Ferguson gives Prescott a couple more weapons in the passing game than Wilson has, and the young collection of edge rushers might come around in time, but on paper, this isn't a significantly more talented roster than Big Blue will be putting on the field. Dallas won its two games in the rivalry last year by a combined 12 points, and it could be more of the same here. Unless, of course, the Giants just up and quit on Daboll, but it might be a bit early for that sort of despair.

NFL weather report: indoors

Head-to-head record, last five years: 9-1 DAL, average score 31-17 DAL, average margin of victory 15 points. DAL has won eight straight meetings and 15 of the last 16, along with eight straight at AT&T Stadium. NYG's last victory in Dallas came in Week 1 of the 2016 season, when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz for a three-yard score in the fourth quarter for a 20-19 win over rookie starter Dak Prescott

The Scoop: Tracy gains 80 combined yards and a touchdown. Wilson throws for under 200 yards but avoids turnovers. Javonte Williams grinds out 70 yards and a score. Prescott throws for 220 yards and a TD to Lamb while also running in a touchdown of his own. Cowboys 24-16

Chicago (+5.5) at Detroit, o/u 47.0 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

Well, the first three quarters of Ben Johnson's tenure in Chicago looked good, anyway. The Bears' late collapse Monday against the Vikings will sting after they saw a 17-6 lead slip away, but there were some positive takeaways. Most of Caleb Williams' issues stemmed from him trying too hard to make something happen as the game began to slip away, and those are the kinds of things that should get ironed out as he grows more confident in the system rather than just his own arm talent. The roster also doesn't yet have all the pieces Johnson might want on offense – Colston Loveland is still adjusting to the pros, and even if D'Andre Swift is a capable lightning in the backfield, there's no thunder yet to take on the David Montgomery role as Roschon Johnson isn't fully healthy and rookie Kyle Monangai hasn't earned the coaching staff's trust yet. Most of the post-loss focus has been on the offense's struggles of course, but the fact that the defense allowed Minnesota to score touchdowns on three straight fourth-quarter drives against a QB making his first career start wasn't great either. DC Dennis Allen's unit has key guys banged up at all three levels, and the quick turnaround won't help either. I still think the Bears will have a solid 2025 when it's all said and done, but they're in the wrong division to get off to a slow start.

Johnson's ex-team didn't look so hot in Week 1 either. The Lions clearly labored after their offseason brain drain (defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn left for the head coaching job with the Jets too), and a loss of continuity on the offensive line didn't help. I don't think it'll take too long to get things humming again, though. New OC John Morton was actually on Dan Campbell's staff in 2022 before joining Sean Payton in Denver for a couple years, so the unit isn't trying to adapt to a completely new scheme, while new DC Kelvin Sheppard is a direct internal hire after being the LB coach the last few years. There's still plenty of talent on both sides of the roster, and arguably more than there was at the end of last year, with players like Aidan Hutchinson being 100 percent healthy again, and third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa doing this on his very first NFL target. The key to how quickly Detroit can return to elite form lies with the O-line, though – if Jared Goff is getting sacked four times a game, it's going to be tough to build any momentum.

NFL weather report: indoors

Head-to-head record, last five years: 6-4 DET, average score 26-23 DET, average margin of victory nine points. DET has won five of the last six meetings, including three straight at Ford Field

The Scoop: Swift pieces together 60 yards. Williams throws for 210 yards and two scores, finding DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus. Gibbs leads the DET backfield with 110 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, while Montgomery gets into the end zone as well. Goff throws for 300 yards and two TDs, hitting Sam LaPorta and Jameson Williams. Lions 34-20

New England (+1.5) at Miami, o/u 44.0 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

Apparently, the Patriots weren't all that motivated to get OC Josh McDaniels some revenge against the Raiders last week. While Drake Maye chucked it up 46 times during a game in which New England never trailed by more than one score, that volume produced only 287 yards and a TD against one INT and four sacks. Unheralded 2023 sixth-round pick Kayshon Boutte wound up leading the team in receiving yards, although Maye did a good job spreading the ball around – Stefon Diggs and rookie RB TreVeyon Henderon tied Boutte for the team lead with six catches, while Hunter Henry also saw good volume and DeMario Douglas caught a short touchdown. Maye's tools are legit, and he looks the part of a franchise QB, so it's just a question of the front office surrounding him with enough talent (both figuratively and literally... that offensive line still needs a lot of work.) The biggest offseason addition might end up being Harold Landry, who followed Mike Vrabel from Tennessee. The veteran edge rusher racked up 2.5 sacks in Week 1, and very quietly he's recorded at least 70 tackles and 9.0 sacks in each of his last three NFL campaigns, flying under the radar to an extent because he missed 2022 due to a torn ACL. His addition to a defense that finished last season dead last in sacks can't be overstated.

Full disclosure – I flipped the outcome I got here from my little jury-rigged algorithm for projecting scores, which originally came out as something like a nine-point Miami win based on mostly 2024 stats. I basically never do that, but I can't overstate how utterly lost the Dolphins looked last week. They looked like a team determined to have their head coach be the first one fired in 2025, and until they show some kind of cohesion on either side of the ball, I have a hard time seeing them beating anyone. It's not just that they got routed in its opener. Miami got routed by Daniel Jones for pity's sake, making him look like Josh Allen as the Colts put points on the board on every one of their offensive drives. DC Lou Anarumo got run out of Cincy on a rail after 2024, but he lands in Indy and immediately holds Tua Tagovailoa to 114 passing yards. About the only Dolphin who showed up in the opener was De'Von Achane, as he somehow came away with 75 scrimmage yards and Miami's only TD. The bloom has been off Mike McDaniel's rose for a while now, and coaxing Darren Waller out of retirement was never going to be the solution, but even so it wouldn't be surprising if DC Anthony Weaver is the fall guy first, even though he did some heroic work last year to keep his unit competitive amidst the chaos.

NFL weather report: 35-45 percent chance of rain

Head-to-head record, last five years: 8-2 MIA, average score 23-16 MIA, average margin of victory nine points. MIA has won five straight meetings at Hard Rock Stadium, with the last NE road win being a 43-0 shellacking in Week 2 of the 2019 season, the last year with Brady and Belichick together, over a Dolphins squad that gave QB snaps to both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen in the game

The Scoop: Henderson leads the NE backfield with 50 yards. Maye throws for 240 yards and two TDs, one each to Henry and Diggs. Achane collects 70 yards. Tagovailoa throws for 200 yards and a touchdown to Tyreek Hill but also tosses a pick-six to Marcus Jones. Patriots 24-13

San Francisco at New Orleans (+4.5), o/u 42.5
Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

We truly are in the weirdest timeline when Christian McCaffrey is the healthiest guy on the Niners' offense. San Francisco could head into this one down its starting QB, stud TE, breakout WR1 from last year and the prior WR1, which is, uhh, not ideal. Assuming Brock Purdy does get time to convalesce, Mac Jones would be under center, and the Patriots' 2021 first-round did show flashes of competence last year in Jacksonville when he had to fill in for Trevor Lawrence down the stretch. Just so long as he gets the ball to CMac 20-plus times, he should be fine, and if he does have to attack downfield, Jones will have targets like Ricky Pearsall and... well, that's about it. The 49ers defense wound up winning last week's game in Seattle, shutting down Sam Darnold aside from a couple chunk plays by Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Robert Saleh's unit will likely need to rise to the occasion again here.

Kellen Moore's first game running the show for the Saints was odd, to say the least. You'd think a team with Spencer Rattler as quarterback would want to limit his exposure, but instead Moore had the 2024 fifth-round pick chuck it up 46 times – tied for the highest Week 1 volume with Josh Allen (who needed to throw that much to engineer a miracle comeback) and Drake Maye (who had Josh McDaniels' spite fueling the play-calling). That bodes decently well for the New Orleans passing game from a fantasy perspective I suppose, but on the other hand, Rattler produced 214 yards and zero TDs on that volume. He did avoid committing any turnovers and only took one sack in all those dropbacks, so I guess that's encouraging. Or it's a scathing indictment of the Cardinals' defense. We'll find out which soon enough. Moore's route tree was narrow, which matches his previous stints as an offensive coordinator, and Chris Olave, Rashid Shaeed and tight end Juwan Johnson saw 33 of those 46 attempts. The lack of usage for Alvin Kamara as a pass-catcher was curious, but if Johnson keeps dominating Rattler's safety blanket role, the veteran RB could see a downturn in his receiving numbers – he didn't have fewer than three targets in a game all of last season, before getting just two in Week 1. DC Brandon Staley's unit held its own and sacked Kyler Murray five times, with Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson leading the way, and despite losing the likes of Tyrann Mathieu in the offseason, the defense could wind up being the thing that keeps the Saints semi-competitive this year.

Buffalo at New York Jets (+6.5), o/u 45.5 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

I guess Josh Allen took that "but should he really have been MVP?" chatter personally. Last week's comeback win over the Ravens made an immediate statement that the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC is going to run through Buffalo, and it's hard to find too much fault in the fact that they were facing a 34-19 deficit through three quarters given the competition. In the long run, the win might be best remembered as Keon Coleman's breakout game, with his reflexive grab in the end zone of a deflected pass kicking off the Bills' surge late in the fourth quarter. If the second-year player emerges as a true WR1 for Allen, the complexion of the offense changes radically. Khalil Shakir (5-44-0 on eight targets in two games against the Jets in 2024) would no longer have to deal with as much attention from the likes of Sauce Gardner, for instance.

Head coach Aaron Glenn was brought in to fix the Jets' defense, but he was also brought it to change the culture in the locker room, and in that sense his first week-plus in change seems to have been a success. Sure they came up short against Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers last week, but that owed more to Rodgers just refusing to lose than anything else. It was after the game that Glenn really set the tone, kicking Xavier Gipson to the curb after he muffed a kickoff. That's the second young wideout who's been sent packing (2024 third-round pick Malachi Corley was a semi-surprise cut at the end of camp) while veteran Allen Lazard was a healthy inactive for Week 1. That might leave receiving options running thin for Justin Fields, but since he only seems to want to throw to Garrett Wilson anyway, it might not be a big deal. Wilson was the only Jet with more than four targets in the season opener, and the only WR with more than 31 yards. There were signs Glenn brought the Lions' backfield philosophy with him from Detroit, as Breece Hall gave way to Braelon Allen in the red zone, but Fields' running provides an extra element that Jared Goff never did. The recent history of this rivalry suggests it'll be a low-scoring game – six of the last nine meetings have featured fewer than 40 points total – but these teams were involved in the two highest-scoring games of Week 1, so a barn burner could be on the table.

The only two NYJ wins during that stretch have come at home, but BUF won last year's meeting at MetLife Stadium, a 23-20 victory in Week 6 when Ray Davis erupted for 152 scrimmage yards on 23 touches in the one 2024 game that James Cook missed

The Scoop: Cook busts out 140 combined yards and two TDs. Allen throws for 290 yards and two more scores, finding Coleman and Shakir, while also running in a touchdown. Hall paces the NYJ backfield with 80 yards and a TD. Fields throws for 230 yards and a score to Wilson while also hitting paydirt himself. Bills 38-27

Seattle (+3) at Pittsburgh, o/u 40.0 – Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

The Seahawks made one of the boldest gambles of the offseason when they swapped out 34-year-old Geno Smith for 28-year-old Sam Darnold, but through one whole week of the NFL schedule, it looks like they might be stuck with a busted flush draw at quarterback. Darnold showed little interest in throwing to anyone with Jaxon Smith-Njigba (which, granted, may not be a poor decision considering his other options), but the duo sabotaged what little offense they threatened to generate by losing two of three fumbles they committed between them. Zach Charbonnet once again looked like the more effective RB, and how stubbornly coach Mike Macdonald continues to give Kenneth Walker a featured role could be one of the big sub-plots of the season in Seattle. Macdonald's Ravens-flavored defense mostly held its own against the Niners who weren't named McCaffrey, and if the team only needs Darnold to drive the bus, they could be OK.

Aaron Rodgers may be a weirdo, but he can still sling it, and last week he was a motivated weirdo. The Steelers were staring at a 26-17 deficit heading into the fourth quarter, and while it got overshadowed by Buffalo's comeback later Sunday night, Pittsburgh's own rally was pretty impressive too. Rodgers wound up hitting four different players for TDs in his revenge game against the Jets, and none of them were DK Metcalf, but he may have just been saving something for Metcalf's own revenge game this week. The wideout was hardly invisible, posting a 4-83-0 line on a team-high seven targets, and the Seahawks just allowed Ricky Pearsall to ring up over 100 yards against them. The Steelers also allowed Breece Hall to rumble for more than 100 yards against them though, and while Darnold doesn't present the same kind of rushing threat Justin Fields does, their run defense could be shaky until first-round pick Derrick Harmon gets healthy. Mike Tomlin always seems to find a way though, and now he's finally got a QB again who shares the same trait.

Los Angeles Rams at Tennessee (+5.5), o/u 42.5
Sunday, 1 p.m. EDT

It wasn't pretty, but the Rams ground out a 14-9 win over the Texans in their opener, as their stars made some big plays and Houston's didn't. Matthew Stafford became the 10th member of the 60,000 passing yards club, and if he stays healthy he could rise as high as seventh before the season's out, passing Dan Marino, Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers. (Ben Roethlisbeger is also a little over 4,000 yards ahead of Stafford, which isn't completely impossible, and Aaron Rodgers is also ahead of him). Puka Nacua got over half his Week 1 passing yards, and with Davante Adams still adjusting to the offense, that could be the case for a while. Kyren Williams also made his usual trip to the end zone, and he'll keep being Sean McVay's bell cow until he breaks down.

Cam Ward's NFL career began as it has for a lot of rookie QBs... with him running for his life. The Broncos sacked him six times, and a young Rams pass rush led by Braden Fiske, Kobie Turner, Jared Verse and Byron Young might not give him any more time in the pocket. Tony Pollard is a fairly reliable backfield option, Week 1 fumble notwithstanding, but until Ward gets a chance to take a breath and build some chemistry with Calvin Ridley, it could be a very long year for the Titans' passing game. DC Dennard Wilson's unit did make things tough on Bo Nix though, and Tennessee has staked an early claim to being the team you can confidently bet the under with every week.

LATE SUNDAY

Carolina (+6.5) at Arizona, o/u 44.5 – Sunday, 4:05 p.m. EDT

A lightning delay may have saved the Panthers from getting truly routed in their opener, as the game was 20-3 Jaguars at halftime before winding up 26-10. Nothing much seemed to have changed from last year – Bryce Young had trouble hitting his receivers or hanging onto the football, and the defense couldn't stop the run at all – but maybe Liam Coen just had their number from his time in the NFC South with the Bucs. Tetairoa McMillan at least looked good when the ball was in his catch radius, and Chuba Hubbard kept Chuba-ing along with 89 scrimmage yards and a TD, but it's already looking like another long season for a franchise that has earned a top-10 pick in six straight drafts (even if Chicago was the team that actually used their 2024 selection).

The Cardinals had a little trouble putting away the Saints in Week 1, but they got the job done with a minimum of fuss in the end. Kyler Murray played an efficient, turnover-free game, Trey Benson showed why the summer buzz was all about how James Conner was going to need to give up some volume in the backfield, and Marvin Harrison gave an early tease of a Year 2 breakout. It almost felt like a preseason contest, where Arizona gave just a peek of their 2025 potential. The team may not need to exert itself much more in this one, and the game script probably bodes well for Benson again, but it would be nice to see DC Nick Rallis' unit assert themselves a little more after managing just one sack and zero takeaways against Spencer Rattler.

Conner piles up 80 yards and a TD before handing the reins to Benson, who adds 60 yards and a score. Murray once again doesn't need to do much, throwing for 230 yards and a touchdown to Harrison. Cardinals 30-17

Denver at Indianapolis (+2), o/u 42.5 – Sunday, 4:05 p.m. EDT

Bo Nix's sophomore season started much the way his rookie campaign did, with a shaky multi-turnover performance, but this time it didn't cost the Broncos a win. He can thank Denver's defense – Cam Ward and Tennessee's offense got so completely dominated, six teams last week averaged more yards per play than the Titans did per drive. Nix improved as 2024 went on and I expect much the same in 2025, as he gets more comfortable with new targets like Evan Engram and RJ Harvey, but the roster is constructed to be able to win close, tight games. If the young QB gives Patrick Surtain, Nik Bonitto and company more breathing room than they need, especially against a banged-up Indy secondary, no one's going to complain.

The Colts are probably the biggest mystery heading into Week 2. They thoroughly stomped the Dolphins in their opener, but that felt like it had a lot more to do with what's happening in Miami than it did with a renaissance in Indy. Daniel Jones looked great... against a defense that didn't seem to care all that much. The step up to what he'll have to deal with in the Pony Bowl should be massive, and Jones' time in New York doesn't suggest he'll handle it particularly well. If he delivers even just a competent performance, then I'll start to believe he's headed for a Darnold-like career revival. He's got plenty of solid weapons if he does, with Tyler Warren reminding everyone last week why outside of the Bears' war room, he was generally viewed as the top tight end available in this year's draft. Jonathan Taylor is still the heartbeat of the offense of course, and when these two teams met last year, he popped for 107 yards – starting his streak of four straight triple-digit rushing efforts to close out the campaign, albeit in a 31-13 romp for Denver.

Key Info

DEN injury report: LB Dre Greenlaw (out, quadriceps)
IND injury report: EDGE Laiatu Latu (questionable, hamstring), CB Charvarius Ward (out, concussion), CB Jaylon Jones (out, hamstring)

Strong lean: TE Evan Engram (IND 29th in DVOA, 26th in receiving yards allowed, 26th in receptions allowed, t-29th in TDs allowed to TEs in 2024)
Slight lean: WR Josh Downs (DEN 27th in passing yards per game allowed to WR3 in 2024)

Slight fade: WR Marvin Mims (IND third in DVOA vs. WR2 in 2024)
Strong fade: RB Jonathan Taylor (DEN first in rushing DVOA, fifth in rushing yards allowed to RBs, t-fourth in rushing TDs allowed to RBs in 2024)
Strong fade: TE Tyler Warren (DEN first in DVOA vs. TE in 2024)

NFL weather report: indoors

The Scoop: J.K. Dobbins leads the DEN backfield with 70 yards and a touchdown, while Harvey adds 50 yards. Nix throws for 260 yards and two TDs, one each to Engram and Courtland Sutton. Taylor gets held to 60 yards. Jones throws for 220 yards and two scores, finding Downs and Michael Pittman, but he gets picked off by Brandon Jones as he tries to put together a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter. Broncos 21-20

Philadelphia at Kansas City (+1), o/u 47.0
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. EDT

The Eagles come into this Super Bowl rematch the slightly more rested squad, having played Thursday instead of Friday and not needing to fly back from Brazil, but hey, they won in February – they should get an advantage out of it. Jalen Carter, of course, will be the best-rested Eagle of all. Assuming he doesn't do something incredibly stupid and gets himself ejected again, the defense should play better after nearly giving the opener away against the Cowboys. Philly leaned heavily on its run game as per usual, with Jalen Hurts running for two TDs and Saquon Barkley adding a third, and A.J. Brown got a stunning one target as a result – his worst volume since the final regular-season game of his rookie season with the Titans in 2019. I'm not remotely concerned about his long-term outlook, and there will be targets up for grabs anyway with Dallas Goedert coming out of Week 1 with a sprained knee. The Eagles may have looked a bit vulnerable in playing down to the level of an inferior opponent, but there's too much talent on both sides of the ball to think they won't be in the Super Bowl mix again in December.

I'm less confident I can say the same thing about Kansas City. It's not just that they lost in Sao Paulo to the Chargers, or that their wide receiver room is once again dealing with injuries. It's the way they lost. The offense started slowly, and once Patrick Mahomes began ramping things up, the defense couldn't get a stop when it needed one. Andy Reid's AFC West dynasty has just about always dominant on one side of the ball or other other, but you really had to squint to see the making of an top-shelf offense or defense in the team's opener. The team should still be good, especially once Rashee Rice is back, but KC seems closer to Cincinnati/Houston good than Buffalo/Baltimore good – or maybe more importantly, closer to Bolts/Denver good. The last time a team other than Kansas City stood atop the division at the end of the season was 2015, when they finished one game behind Peyton Manning's Broncos, but that nine-year streak of AFC West crowns feels like it's in serious jeopardy.

Key Info

PHI injury report: TE Dallas Goedert (out, knee), LB Nakobe Dean (PUP, knee)
KC injury report: WR Xavier Worthy (doubtful, shoulder), WR Rashee Rice (out, suspension)

Slight lean: WR A.J. Brown (KC 26th in DVOA vs. WR1 in 2024)
Slight lean: WR Hollywood Brown (PHI 24th in DVOA vs. WR1 in 2024)

Slight fade: RB Saquon Barkley (KC third in rushing yards allowed to RBs, third in passing DVOA vs. RBs in 2024)
Strong fade: QB Patrick Mahomes (PHI second in passing DVOA, second in passing yards allowed in 2024)
Strong fade: WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (PHI first in DVOA vs. WR2 in 2024)

NFL weather report: 5-25 percent chance of rain

The Scoop: Barkley manages 80 combined yards and a TD. Hurts throws for 220 yards and two touchdowns, hitting Brown (A.J.) and Grant Calcaterra while also running in a score. Isiah Pacheco leads the KC backfield with 60 yards and a TD. Mahomes throws for 220 yards and a touchdown to Brown (Hollywood). Eagles 31-17

SUNDAY NIGHT

Atlanta (+4.5) at Minnesota, o/u 45.0 – Sunday, 8:20 p.m. EDT

The Falcons missed a chance to send their opener into OT when Younghoe Koo's 44-yard attempt with six seconds left on the clock veered wide right like it got caught in a sudden gust of AC inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but it was a weird game all around for Atlanta. Bijan Robinson couldn't get anything going on the ground but posted a 6-100-1 line as a receiver. Drake London got 15 targets and finished third on Atlanta in receiving yards. Michael Penix had a good start to his first full season as the starter, throwing for nearly 300 yards and not committing any turnovers, and assuming the ground game gets going, this should at least be a fun offense, if not an elite one. Raheem Morris' defense also held the Bucs mostly in check, although getting torched twice by rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka had to hurt. The pieces might be in place for Atlanta to escape mediocrity – the franchise hasn't had a winning season since 2017 – but Morris still has to prove he can be the guy who gets them over the hump.

Talk about flipping a switch. For three quarters Monday, it looked like Kevin O'Connell still had work to do if J.J. McCarthy was going to become Minnesota's franchise QB. Three straight TD drives and a comeback win against a divisional foe later, and McCarthy's already got a spot reserved from him in Valhalla. His final numbers in the box score weren't anything special, but McCarthy's still getting on the same page with Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson, and Jordan Addison's still a couple weeks away from his 2025 debut. If the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft is indeed the real thing, and DC Brian Flores' unit plays up to its usual level, the Vikes should be headed for their third double-digit win total in four seasons with O'Connell at the helm.

Slight lean: QB J.J. McCarthy (ATL 27th in passing DVOA, 31st in passing TDs allowed in 2024)

Slight fade: QB Michael Penix (MIN first in passing DVOA in 2024)
Slight fade: WR Adam Thielen (ATL second in yards/game allowed to WR2 in 2024)

NFL weather report: indoors

The Scoop: Robinson bangs out 80 yards and a touchdown. Penix throws for 240 yards and a score to London, but also tosses a pick-six to Byron Murphy. Aaron Jones leads the MIN backfield with 70 yards and a TD. McCarthy erupts for 290 yards and two touchdowns, hitting Jefferson (who tops 100 yards) and Hockenson. Vikings 28-23

MONDAY NIGHT

Tampa Bay (+2.5) at Houston, o/u 42.5 – Monday, 7 p.m. EDT

It took three Baker Mayfield TD throws, two to rookie Emeka Egbuka, but the Buccaneers were able to squeak by the Falcons in Week 1. Egbuka immediately looked like the real deal, and the Tampa Bay passing game is going to be a real problem for secondaries when Chris Godwin gets healthy to join Egbuka and Mike Evans, because there aren't any defenses I can think of capable of handling three guys with WR1 talent and upside. If anyone on the Bucs offense is going to miss Liam Coen it'll probably be Bucky Irving, who struggled to get anything going on the ground but at least caught Mayfield's other TD pass. If there's a worry coming into this one, it's that neither of Mayfield's tackles might be in the lineup, which could be a big problem against Danielle Hunter, Will Anderson and company.

The Texans also played a close one in Week 1 but came out on the wrong end, as C.J. Stroud's inability to get the ball into the end zone led to a 14-9 loss to the Rams. He spread the ball around well enough – seven different players caught multiple passes from the QB – but nobody produced a big play when the team needed one. Stroud still had to deal with plenty of pressure behind a rebuilt offensive line, and while his stellar rookie season hasn't completely faded from memory yet, he's going to need some help to get back to that level. Breaking in a new OC in Nick Caley, formerly on Sean McVay's staff, doesn't help in the short term either. Nick Chubb also might never regain his peak, pre-injury form, but if he continues to be merely solid, it would help Stroud feel less like he's got to carry the whole offense himself.

Key Info

TB injury report: WR Chris Godwin (doubtful, ankle), WR Jalen McMillan (IR, neck), LT Tristan Wirfs (doubtful, knee), RT Luke Goedeke (questionable, foot)
HOU injury report: RB Joe Mixon (NFI, foot), WR Christian Kirk (questionable, hamstring), C Jake Andrews (questionable, ankle), EDGE Denico Autry (PUP, knee)

Slight lean: QB Baker Mayfield (TB fifth in offensive passing DVOA, HOU 30th in passing TDs allowed in 2024)
Slight lean: TE Dalton Schultz (TB 27th in DVOA vs. TEs, 31st in receiving yards allowed to TEs in 2024)

Strong fade: RB Bucky Irving (HOU third in rushing DVOA, second in passing DVOA vs. RBs, t-sixth in rushing TDs allowed to RBs in 2024)
Slight fade: WR Jayden Higgins (TB sixth in DVOA vs. WR2 in 2024)

NFL weather report: indoors

The Scoop: Irving gains 70 yards. Mayfield throws for 250 yards and another three touchdowns, one each to Evans, Egbuka and Cade Otton. Chubb grinds out 50 yards. Stroud throws for 220 yards and two TDs, both to Nico Collins, but he also loses a fumble on a sack that Yaya Diaby returns to the house. Buccaneers 31-14

Los Angeles Chargers at Las Vegas (+3.5), o/u 47.0
Monday, 10 p.m. EDT

The Bolts' win over Kansas City last week in Sao Paulo might not prove to be a statement game in the long run, but it sure felt like one. It was Justin Herbert's first victory over his biggest division rival since 2021, and his three-headed receiving monster of Ladd McConkey, Keenan Allen and Quentin Johnston appears to be a strong blend of youth and experience, size and speed, athleticism and route-running savvy. Jim Harbaugh's defense mostly held Patrick Mahomes in check aside from the occasional physics-defying toss, and while Omarion Hampton couldn't quite get going, he may have been saving his own statement game for his first of what should be many clashes with the only running back taken ahead of him in the 2025 draft.

The Raiders also head into this one 1-0, handing Pete Carroll career victory No. 171 and putting him one behind the other Harbaugh brother on the all-time list. Geno Smith had one of the occasional yardage eruptions Seattle fans got used to seeing – he topped 300 yards five times last year, and 350 twice – as he got himself acquainted with Brock Bowers (5-103-0 on eight targets) and Jakobi Meyers (8-97-0 on 10 targets), while still finding room for a couple deep heaves to Tre Tucker and Dont'e Thornton. Ashton Jeanty also scored his first career TD, a three-yard plunge in the third quarter that put Vegas ahead of New England for good, and while there isn't a lot of talent on this offense, there's enough to make things interesting. OC Chip Kelly was supposed to be bringing a run-heavy scheme, and Jeanty will get his chances, but Carroll had no problem airing it out with the Seahawks when that was what was working. The Raiders still look like the fourth-best team in the AFC West on paper, but at least it might be a competitive fourth.

The Scoop: Hampton piles up 80 yards and a score on the ground. Herbert throws for 280 yards and three touchdowns, one each to McConkey, Johnston and Will Dissly. Jeanty gets held to 50 yards. Smith throws for 210 yards and two TDs, hitting Bowers and Meyers. Chargers 34-17

THURSDAY NIGHT

Washington (+3.5) at Green Bay, o/u 48.0
Thursday, 8:15 p.m. EDT

The Commanders had little trouble putting down the Giants in their season opener, but that seemed to have a lot more to do with the state of the Giants than anything else. Jayden Daniels produced a combined 301 yards through the air and on the ground, while rookie seventh-rounder Jacory Croskey-Merritt rewarded the team's faith in him with 82 yards and a TD on only 10 carries. With Terry McLaurin perhaps not quite up to game speed after his contract dispute lasted into late August, Deebo Samuel was a surprise standout, flashing back to his usage with the Niners by posting a 7-77-0 line on 10 targets while adding a 19-yard TD on his only carry. Dan Quinn's defense was stingy against what might be a rapidly aging Russell Wilson, but it's still not producing the kind of splash plays his units are known for, managing just two sacks and zero takeaways. Things might look more Quinn-like going forward, though — Wilson was pressured on nearly half his dropbacks (22 of 45), per NextGen Stats, and while the roster may lack a true alpha pass rusher, Dorance Armstrong, Deatrich Wise, Frankie Luvu and whatever Von Miller has left in the tank isn't a terrible group.

Speaking of Quinn's last alpha pass rusher back in his Dallas days, Micah Parsons' Packers debut went about as well as anyone in Green Bay could have hoped. He brought down Jared Goff only once himself, but his disruptive presence helped the team rack up four sacks in total. Fun/bonkers factoid: Parsons, Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness were on the field together for only seven plays. The Lions gained six yards total against them. The 27-13 win over the Lions was a team effort on both sides of the ball and was aided by the fact that Detroit is breaking in two new coordinators and three new starting offensive linemen, but it was still a divisional win in the standings. Jordan Love was efficient on just 22 pass attempts, as he tossed two TDs and didn't commit a turnover or get sacked, and Josh Jacobs got rolling late and punched in a fourth-quarter score to put the game out of reach. Matthew Golden had a quiet debut, but he looked the part of a future WR1 at least, and if he becomes the player the Packers expected when they popped him with the 23rd overall pick, this team is a legit Super Bowl contender. (They might be without him, to be honest, but a Golden breakout would provide what seems to be the only missing piece on the roster.)
