Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After four consecutive seasons as the Astros closer, Pressly was relegated to setup duties after Houston signed Josh Hader last winter. The veteran right-hander recorded 25 holds (12th in the league), but the signs of decline that were evident in 2023 carried over to last season. Nagging back issues may have been to blame, but Pressly's strikeout and walk rates and four-seam fastball velocity continue to trend in the wrong direction. While it's difficult to get excited about the veteran's prospects moving forward, Pressly's $14 million option for 2025 vested when he made his 45th appearance last year. After being traded to the Cubs in January, Pressly should have more fantasy relevance since he's expected to step in as the closer for his new team. Read Past Outlooks

Works ninth inning in rout
Pressly worked a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout in Saturday's 12-3 win over the Astros.
Analysis
Pressly closed things out Saturday, though it was far from a save situation. It was also his first game action in four days. The veteran righty managed to secure a save back on June 12, but since then, Daniel Palencia has rattled off the team's last three saves. Pressly is at least pitching better after a rough start to the season, as he now has a 1.23 ERA over his last 15 appearances. However, it appears that Palencia is the clear closer in Chicago at this point, with Pressly working in a setup role along with Porter Hodge and Drew Pomeranz.

Pressly didn't record his first save until late-April, but he still managed to finish with 30-plus saves for the second consecutive year. The veteran remained healthy for the most part, avoiding the IL entirely while missing only a few games due to illness and soreness. However, signs of a potential decline were evident, as Pressly posted career-worst marks with a 43.5% hard-hit rate and fourth percentile average exit velocity (91.3 mph). The right-hander's 27.6% strikeout rate -- while still well above average -- dipped by 8.3 percentage points and was his lowest since 2017. Pressly remained dominant at times, including a 16-game stretch early in the season with a 1.13 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB over 16 innings. However, he will likely move down in the bullpen hierarchy this season with the Astros' addition of Josh Hader in free agency.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Strain with former GM
After trading Pressly to the Cubs, Astros GM Dana Brown indicated that his relationship with the reliever became "fractured" after Houston signed closer Josh Hader last January, reports Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
Analysis
Pressly had a four-year run as the Astros' closer, but his 3.58 ERA and other bullpen troubles prompted the signing of Hader. Pressly then filled a setup role last season, posting a 3.49 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 58:18 K:BB while recording four saves and 25 holds. The 36-year-old is expected to open 2025 as Chicago's primary closer, with Porter Hodge also expected to be in the ninth-inning mix.
