For the Super Bowl this weekend, FanDuel is running a single-game contest consisting of five flex spots including one "MVP" spot. The player selected for the "MVP" spot can be any player, and placing him there does not affect his salary at all. Odds and numbers used in this article were taken from the FanDuel Sportsbook (https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/sports).
CASH GAMES
For cash games, it makes a lot of sense to use a quarterback (namely Tom Brady) in your "MVP" spot. Quarterbacks score the most fantasy points, and Brady has put up some big numbers in past Super Bowls. Sony Michel ($14,500) is a viable option in the "MVP" spot as well and has actually outscored Tom Brady over their last two games. He has a 54.55 percent chance of scoring a touchdown (as does Todd Gurley). Using Tom Brady ($15,500), Jared Goff ($15,500) and Sony Michel ($14,500) as your first three selections in cash is a viable route given there are still decent low-end options to fill out your last two spots. Here are the players you would then have to choose from:
Chris Hogan ($7,500): has an over/under of 41.5 receiving yards, three receptions, 26.32 percent chance to score a TD.
Cordarrelle Patterson ($6,500): has an over/under of 14.5 receiving yards, 1.5 receptions, 14.29 percent chance to score a touchdown.
Tyler Higbee ($6,500): has an over under of 23.5 receiving yards, two receptions, 21.28 percent chance to score a touchdown.
Gerald Everett ($6,000): has an over/under of 23.5 receiving yards, 2.5 receptions, 21.28 percent chance to score a touchdown.
Judging from those numbers (which you can find at the FanDuel Sportsbook), it makes sense to go with Hogan and then Everett, even though you'll have money left over.
GPPs
Here are some players to consider in GPPs who have a low floor but a high ceiling. Again, with a limited player pool to choose from this week, don't be afraid to leave money on the table and not "zero out" all of your salary cap.
James White ($12,500): White has been up and down all season scoring 20 or more fantasy points four times but also scoring less than 10 points five times. His ability to make an impact in the passing and run game is unique compared to the other players on this slate. White has a 37.74 percent chance of scoring a touchdown.
Rex Burkhead ($10,000): Burkhead's price has ballooned coming off a two-touchdown performance against the Chiefs. It's highly unlikely he comes close to scoring more than 20 fantasy points again, which will be the mindset of most leading to a low ownership. As a result, he's a very contrarian play this weekend making him a good GPP candidate.
C.J. Anderson ($10,500): Would it be a surprise if we find out after the Super Bowl that Todd Gurley is a lot more hurt than has been let on? Anderson has gotten 23 and 16 carries in the Rams two playoff games, sharing the workload in the backfield with Gurley. The offensive line for Los Angeles is one of the best in the league, and Anderson has averaged 5.7 yards per carry with the Rams.
Brandin Cooks ($11,500), Robert Woods ($10,500): It's hard to determine who Stephon Gilmore will cover, although it's possible he spends time shadowing both players. Woods or Cooks could be the difference maker in this game with Cooks likely having better big-play ability. Don't be afraid to try using one in the "MVP" spot.
Stephen Gostkowski ($9,500), Greg Zuerlein ($10,000): Think this game is going to be a low-scoring, defensive battle? Don't forget about the kickers who are two of the best in the league. They both have the confidence of their coaches and weather won't be an issue even if the roof is open. The strategy of using one or both could pay off handsomely if this game ends up being a 15-9 affair.
