DraftKings College Football: Get Gurley While You Can

DraftKings College Football: Get Gurley While You Can

This article is part of our DraftKings College Football series.

Not only is DraftKings is a great spot to play daily fantasy sports in MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, PGA and college basketball, but it has all the college football DFS you could ever handle, too. We're excited to debut our weekly DraftKings college fantasy football series.

The DraftKings lineup consists of QB/QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/WR/TE/FLEX, and the scoring is standard aside from PPR and three-point bonuses for 300-plus yards passing and 100-plus yards rushing/receiving.

Looking at the Saturday slate, here's the squad I put together with a $50,000 salary cap:

QUARTERBACK

C.J. Brown - Maryland vs. James Madison ($6,400)

Brown often gets overlooked due to his injury history and lack of polish as a passer, but his rushing skills make him a home-run hitter when he faces a vulnerable defense. An FCS opponent like James Madison qualifies as such. The Dukes went 6-6 last year and allowed 35 points to Akron, so Brown should have a big game both as a passer and runner. Playing in Weeks 1 and 2 last year against similar underdog opponents Florida International and Old Dominion, Brown combined for 556 yards and five touchdowns as a passer with 135 yards and four scores on the ground. That's just short of 40 points per game on DraftKings.

Wes Lunt - Illinois vs. Youngstown State ($6,400)

Lunt is a former Oklahoma State transfer who will take over the Illinois offense in 2014. Illinois attempted 37.9 passes per game last year, and that figure should increase this year since Lunt won't run the ball as often as former QB Nathan Scheelhaase. This one seems like a lock for the 300-yard bonus.

QB Alternates: Danny Etling - Purdue vs. Western Michigan ($4,500), Jacoby Brissett - N.C. State vs. Georgia Southern ($5,500)

RUNNING BACK

Storm Woods - Oregon State vs. Portland State ($4,400)

Woods was atrocious as a runner last year, totaling just 477 yards (3.8 YPC) and six touchdowns, but he has a favorable matchup in Week 1 and is one of the nation's most active pass-catching backs. He caught 47 passes in 10 games last year.

Todd Gurley - Georgia vs. Clemson ($6,900)

For an absolute monster like Gurley, this is a generous price. Gurley lit up Clemson for 154 yards and two scores on just 12 carries last year, and he caught 32 passes in the final six games of the season.

RB Alternates: Cameron Artis-Payne - Auburn vs. Arkansas ($5,700), Marcus Murphy - Missouri vs. San Diego State ($4,400)

WIDE RECEIVER

Jamison Crowder - Duke vs. Elon ($6,600)

Crowder is one of the most beastly PPR receivers of recent memory, totaling 184 catches the last two years. He might get an even bigger share of the Duke passing game this year since second-leading 2013 receiver Braxton Deaver (ACL) won't play this year.

Chris Harper - California at Northwestern ($6,200)

The Northwestern defense is experienced and it's concerning that Harper is on the road, but Harper torched the Wildcats last year (11 catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns), and second-year quarterback Jared Goff could be significantly improved after a promising freshman season.

Devin Funchess - Michigan vs. Appalachian State ($4,400)

Funchess probably won't be a PPR monster, but the huge, fast target should safely be Michigan's leading receiver this year, and a matchup like this presents obvious touchdown opportunities.

WR Alternates: Shane Wynn - Indiana vs. Indiana State ($5,800), DeAngelo Yancey - Purdue vs. Western Michigan ($3,600), Bud Sasser - Missouri vs. San Diego State ($4,200)

TIGHT END

Connor Hamlett - Oregon State vs. Portland State ($2,900)

Hamlett caught 40 passes in nine games last year, so he's an obvious target in PPR scoring like DraftKings'. It certainly helps that he's playing against a defense that probably can't slow the Oregon State passing game.

TE Alternates: Gabe Holmes - Purdue vs. Western Michigan ($2,000), Jon Davis - Illinois vs. Youngstown State ($2,000)

FLEX

RB Treyvon Green - Northwestern vs. California ($4,700)

With Venric Mark gone and Stephen Buckley (knee) out, Green should get almost all the carries to himself in Week 1. California's defense was remarkably bad a year ago, and Green showed good workhorse potential when he started in 2013. One of Green's best games were against California, in fact, as he totaled 129 yards and two scores on 16 carries.
