The Armband: FPL Gameweek 37 Captain Rankings

This article is part of our The Armband series.

Gameweek 37 is the last chance to truly make a dent in the fantasy Premier League standings, and now is the time to use your triple captain on a guy who's going to hit 30 fantasy points. That said, there aren't many different places to go for the armband, with Liverpool out of the running since they don't have a double.

The only sides worth considering for captain are Man City (v. HUD, v. BHA), Man United (at BHA, at WHU) and Tottenham (at WBA, v. NEW). Chelsea have two home matches, but there's no guarantee that any of their attacking players will start both, and that includes Eden Hazard. I'd be more inclined to get Marcos Alonso or Victor Moses on the squad, but probably not for captain. For the Arsenal fans, I'm not going to bother playing games between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who could switch spots in their matches against Burnley and at Leicester.

The player most people will turn to is Harry Kane, who managed to score last match but still only reached six fantasy points. The only reason I'd doubt Spurs players is that they've lacked firepower lately, failing to score more than two goals in their last five matches in all competitions. That includes a 1-1 draw at Brighton and 2-1 win at Stoke. West Brom are still fighting relegation and have taken eight points from their last four. As for Newcastle, they haven't allowed more than two goals in their last five away games.

Kane is still the clear play with four shots on goal in the last two, with Christian Eriksen the differential pick after putting up four goals and two assists in his last six. He doesn't have a shot on goal in the last two, but he created six chances over that span. Dele Alli doesn't get enough opportunity to consider as captain, while Heung-min Son has struggled to convert over the last month. Son displayed upside at times with braces back in January, but he's more likely than the others to finish with only four fantasy points this gameweek.

Man City should be just as popular in terms of finding a captain with two home matches against favorable competition. Huddersfield have a minus-21 goal differential on the road, and while Brighton have only allowed 22 away goals, they've given up seven in their last four. I'm sticking with the same strategy I've used the last few weeks, with Raheem Sterling over everyone else. He has scored or assisted in his last seven starts and has five shots on goal and six chances created in his last three. That's similar to Gabriel Jesus, who has scored in four straight and has nine shots on goal and seven chances created in his last four. Due to assists, Sterling is more reliable. Kevin De Bruyne is getting opportunities but lacks upside and has only one goal and one assist in his last nine starts. Leroy Sane and David Silva would be logical differentials, but neither are guaranteed to start after sitting against Swansea two matches ago.

Man United have two away matches, but they've been more consistent to close the season with multiple goals in six of their last seven, including eight in their last three away game. Brighton have been better at home with more than one goal allowed in only one of their last seven there, while West Ham just gave up four to Man City. Unfortunately, the absence of Romelu Lukaku makes things a little difficult and I'm not going out of my way to suggest Marcus Rashford. Alexis Sanchez has two shots on goal in his last five starts, which makes Paul Pogba slightly easier to trust with five shots on goal and three chances created over his last four. Either way, I'm not going to give the armband to any of the Red Devils.
