Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Criswell did a little bit of everything for the Boston pitching staff in 2024. He worked out of the pen as well as in the rotation as injuries impacted the rotation. Peak Criswell was him throwing seven shutout innings at Coors Field near the end of July, which was one of the five starts in which he earned a win out of his 18 starts. The flip side was his effort against Baltimore, as he faced them twice and allowed 13 earned runs in 7.1 innings of work, which did a number on his overall ratios. Criswell has enough stuff to succeed at the big-league level but not enough stuff to be a set-it-and-forget-it type pitcher for fantasy managers. The righty had his issues against fellow righties last season (.283/.335/.476), but his cutter/changeup approach to lefties helped him hold that group to a .263/.332/.366 line on the season. Criswell is currently slated to compete for a final spot in the Boston rotation, but could go to the bullpen or to Triple-A to begin the season as well. His ceiling is a streaming option, particularly against lefty-heavy lineups. Read Past Outlooks

Sent to minors
The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After joining the rotation in mid-August as a replacement for James Paxton (calf) and covering at least three innings in each of his six ensuing outings, Criswell had worked out of the bullpen for his last two appearances, giving up a total of three runs (two earned) over two innings. With Richard Fitts overtaking him as the Red Sox's No. 5 starter and with Luis Garcia (elbow) returning from the injured list, Criswell will end up as an odd man out on the 28-man active roster. The 28-year-old righty owns a 4.08 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 99.1 innings with the Red Sox on the season.

Catch up on the players who won jobs in the final days of camp around the American League, including Cam Smith of the Astros.

Several job battles have been settled around the American League, including the Royals' fifth starter job, which appears to have been won by Kris Bubic.

Todd Zola tries to remove volume from the equation when determining the value of pitchers, and finds that the market may have over-corrected on Logan Webb.

This year's bold predictions series kicks off with the Orioles and Jordan Westburg, who could be the top second baseman in a weak year for the position.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Criswell spent the year in the Rays organization, mostly toiling for Triple-A Durham, but he also compiled 33 frames in 10 appearances with the big club serving as a multi-inning reliever. Criswell started in 17 of his 23 appearances with the Bulls, fanning 80 with 23 walks in 84.2 innings for a 15.4 percent K-BB%. He was unable to match that with the Rays as he recorded a 10.6 percent K-BB%, along with surrendering six homers in those 33 innings. Small sample caveats apply, but Criswell incurred some misfortune with a .330 BABIP, 68.7 percent left on base mark and a 19.4 percent home run per fly ball. The result was a 5.73 ERA, deemed over a run too high by its estimators. When Tampa Bay gives up on a pitcher, there is usually a reason, but that did not dissuade the Red Sox from signing Criswell, ostensibly for bullpen depth. It's hard to envision Criswell entering the fantasy mix.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Chance to join rotation?
The Red Sox placed Nick Pivetta on the injured list with a flexor strain Tuesday, which could open up a rotation spot for Criswell.
ANALYSIS
Criswell last pitched for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday and won't be an option to start in place of Pivetta on Wednesday, but he's otherwise a logical candidate to step into the rotation after posting a 2.95 ERA while competing for a spot during spring training. Criswell is also off to a strong start at Worcester this season with just one run allowed and a 9:3 K:BB over 10.1 innings through two outings. The Red Sox could also move up the rest of their rotation, in which case they would need another starter Saturday, per Ian Browne of MLB.com.
