Rams vs Seahawks Prediction

When all is said and done, we might look back on Seahawks-Rams as the "real" Super Bowl. Though I did say that about Jaguars-Bills, and Buffalo won that game and was promptly eliminated the following week, so what do I know?

But for my money, these are the two most complete teams in the NFL. Both teams are well coached, play great defense, and can beat you on the ground and through the air. When stacking all four units against each other, this is as close as it gets. That's not to say they're equal in all facets of the game – Seattle is better defensively while LA has the edge on offense.

LAR was the No. 2 offense in EPA per play and No. 1 in success rate this season. Defensively, SEA was No. 1 and No. 3 in those metrics, respectively. On the other side of the ball, Seattle was No. 14 in offensive EPA per play and No. 8 in success rate, while LA's D was No. 7 in both categories. That birds-eye view suggests LA has a slight edge, but Seattle getting this one at home erases that gap.

As a result, I'll deviate from my standard decision-making process and dig a little deeper: I think the Rams' issues on special teams might cost them this game.

The Rams' punting unit was dead last in total EPA this season. They weren't much better with field goals, hitting 22-of-28 attempts. That 78.6% clip was the fifth-worst mark in the league. If this Seahawks' defense is consistently limiting the Rams to punts or FG attempts, as they've done all year, those issues might rear their head.

I understand no one loves spending this much time reading about special teams. I don't even particularly enjoy writing about it. But remember, that unit blew it for the Rams in the instant-classic game these two played in Week 16. They allowed a punt-return TD to Rashid Shaheed late in the fourth quarter that got Seattle back in it, and they likely would've won in regulation had Harrison Mevis not missed a go-ahead field goal with two minutes left.

We just saw how dangerous Seattle's special teams can be last week against San Francisco – Shaheed opened the game with a 95-yard kickoff return TD, and the Seahawks never looked back. In a game as evenly matched as this one, a special-teams edge could easily be the difference.
