Green took a small step back last season, partially due to the addition of Fred VanVleet and the emergence of Alperen Sengun. However, the third-year pro was still second on the team in points (19.6) and third in assists (3.5) per game. While it wasn't enough to give fantasy managers a good return on investment, he had a massive end to the season. With Sengun sidelined for the final 18 games of the season, Green averaged 24.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.0 steals on 45/38/79 shooting. That could give optimists hope that the 22-year-old will be able to turn the corner in his development this season, but we also can't count on Sengun getting hurt again or taking on less usage. Green will have to prove he's capable of taking on a bigger scoring burden, and do so efficiently, which has been his main struggle to this point. And if Green doesn't have it going on a particular night, the Rockets have no shortage of young players with upside to steal some minutes. Fantasy managers don't have much to lose drafting Green around pick 80 in category formats - closer to 60 in points formats - but that's mostly based on faith in the player and not a better situation. If he can finally combine his top-shelf athleticism with better shooting from everywhere on the court, Green may start looking more like the No. 2 pick that he was in 2021. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Jalen Romande Green was born in February of 2002 in Merced, California, but grew up in Livingston, California. He is the son of mother Bree Puruganan and step-father Marcus Green and has a younger sister. Green initially played his high school basketball at San Joaquin Memorial. As a freshman, he delivered 18.1 points and nine rebounds per contest and earned MaxPreps Freshman All-American second-team honors. In his sophomore season, Green led San Joaquin to a Central Section Division II title and was named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year. In his third season at San Joaquin, Green averaged 30.1 points per game and again lead the team to a DII title. Green then transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, California, where he led the team to a Grind Session world championship. Green also earned Sports Illustrated's All-American Player of the Year award. The five-star recruit decided to sign with the NBA G League's new Ignite team instead of committing to a major college program. Green was the first player to join Ignite. The Ignite were created to play exhibition games outside the G League's traditional schedule as part of a one-year development program for elite NBA prospects. With the Ignite, Green posted 17.9 points and 4.1 boards per G League contest. In July of 2021, Green was selected by the Houston Rockets with the second overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Green contributed 34 points (13-22 FG, 4-10 3Pt, 4-5 FT), six rebounds, three assists and one steal over 32 minutes during Thursday's 133-113 win over the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS Green logged his fourth 30-plus-point outing while leading the Rockets to victory with a game-high 34 points. The 22-year-old has delivered some stellar performances this season, though consistency has been an issue for him thus far. Over his last five outings, Green has averaged 20.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting only 25.6 percent from three-point range across 33.8 minutes per contest.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Green was able to take his scoring from 17.3 points per game during his rookie season to 22.1 points per game in 2022-23. His assist numbers also increased, as did his steals and rebounds. However, his rank fell from 196 to 199, basically on the back of one category alone. After showing improved efficiency toward the tail-end of his inaugural campaign, the hope was that he would build on that momentum on a team with very little to play for. Unfortunately, for anyone that drafted him, that was not the case. He shot 41.6 percent from the field on 17.9 attempts in 2022-23, dragging down his overall value significantly. The arrival of Fred VanVleet does mean that Green could get some better looks at the basket moving forward. A resulting increase in efficiency could turn his fantasy fortunes around, making him a player with top-120 upside. With that said, he will need to find another way to contribute should he ever want to be anything more than a score-first option. Given what we have seen, it is unlikely to come on the defensive end, meaning it is his assist numbers that will need to increase. With VanVleet running the point, that too feels unlikely, meaning Green could find it hard to make any real fantasy noise, at least not for the foreseeable future.
Green closed out the 2021-22 campaign on a hot streak, averaging 28.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists over 36.8 minutes per contest during his final nine games. While it's unlikely he will match that output, his line of 22.1 points, 3.8 boards and 4.2 assists per contest after the All-Star break seems like an attainable goal. The uber-athletic second-year talent should be given every opportunity to thrive on a rebuilding Rockets team full of youth. While Houston returns most of its roster from last season, it's a fairly youth-laden roster. Green should pair with Kevin Porter in the backcourt again. An uptick in Green's scoring column could make him a bit more intriguing from a fantasy standpoint. He should also supply a substantial volume of makes from beyond the arc, averaging 3.1 makes per contest in the second half. Green also limited his turnovers down the stretch (1.6 per game after the All-Star break), so he could feature more utility in leagues that include the category. Unless Green advances in other statistical areas, his fantasy value will likely remain somewhat limited, leaving him in mid-to-late-round territories depending on the draft format.
A few years from now, it wouldn't be shocking if Green emerges as the best player from the 2021 draft. But in terms of immediate fantasy impact, he's in a tier just below Cade Cunningham. A natural, polished scorer, Green will be the favorite to lead all rookies in points per game. He shined in three Summer League games, and his G League Ignite numbers imply that he'll carry a high three-point attempt rate. While that will likely lead to a relatively pedestrian field goal percentage, that's par for the course when it comes to rookie guards. In terms of non-scoring stats, Green averaged 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 15 G League games (32.0 MPG), so while points will be his calling card, he can still offer some non-scoring production. The biggest question for Green is where he'll fall in the hierarchy for a rebuilding Rockets team that features a borderline-All-Star in Christian Wood and a high-volume gunner in Kevin Porter Jr. However, Green's development should take precedence over Wood and Porter.

Still in the rumor mill
GHouston Rockets
December 3, 2024
Despite signing an offseason extension, Green is still a candidate to be moved ahead of the trade deadline, Michael Scotto of Hoopshype reports.
ANALYSIS Green signed a three-year, $105.3 million extension before the season, but he finds his name in the rumor mill yet again. He has once again struggled with consistency this season, as he's hitting 39.3 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from beyond the arc through 21 regular-season games. He has underwhelmed as a playmaker as well, averaging 2.7 assists per contest.
